I said this in another thread, it's not the most accessible film. I think you will like it though (that's not a dis or anything, cause I'm like that movie's biggest fan).

I've always heard it referred to as Sans Soleil. I watched it in a class about documentaries. Was a really good context for it. It's pretty cool.

On the subject of film, I've been doing a Werner Herzog impression lately. Where I start talking about something conceptually tangential to the discussion and just kind of ramble off in an esoteric and self important way.

Also on the subject of film, I watched Citizen Kane last night. I totes get the hype. Very well made film.

I read an interview with Marker recently where he said he had no idea why Americans called it SANS SOLEIL because in the credit sequence he used five different language or something. He thought people just wanted to sound cultured so they used the French titles (as opposed to the Japanese or Russian). Could also be because French is latin based language?

I don't love the direction Herzog documentaries have been going since THE WHITE DIAMOND but I am glad someone is still making films like that. His movies, like Marker's, are more essays at this point than documentaries (or some hybrid).

Welles made a bunch of other awesome movies too. Greg Toland will forever have his place in cinema history.

That movie rocks! "Experimental Documentary" at its finest.

Probably 90% this.

The other 10 being that "Sun less" or "without sun" is just kind of a linguistically awkward. We have words for dark and in the shadows. "Without Sun" is just kind of descriptively ambiguous compared to other obvious ways of presenting the idea. Of course, presenting an idea succinctly in plain language isn't really what that film is about, now is it? :idk:

Exactly (film in general) and especially that film (which at its core is a meditation on the essence of memory). Not really a quantifiable thing. I think the title does it justice in a poetic way. "Sun less" does not necessarily mean dark. There is light but without sun. I truly do not know where the title comes from though.

I lent my copy to a friend and he turned it off. He said he had a hard time with it. Like the movie gave him anxiety or something. Film essays are not the easiest thing for people accustomed to a three act narrative structure, a TED Talk format, or a talking head documentary (and SUNLESS is none of these things).

A lot of Marker's work is about memory and ideas. The closest director I can think of is DuĊĦan Makavejev (and even they are worlds apart).

Doggystyle while I'm wearing her skirt and also growling my best authentically lispy Christian Bale Batman voice.
Truly, this is living.

I applaud this not only as an amazing post in its own right, but as an act of humanity to be lauded and commended.

Yeah but the mechanics of that position in a skirt (for a dude) are very confusing.

More impressive/confusing is the fact that Ach was able to fit into it.
I understand that he is a tall and sizeable bloke.

I just hold up the front with one hand whenever I'm fucking in a skirt.

Right, meaning the allure of the skirt is gone.

And I think the waistbands are often elastic, iPope.
