Rom-Com animes that start out really promising and then suddenly turn into shitty harems where there is absolutely no resolution or closure make me want to rip my face off, so that's pretty scary.

Fo serious though, I think the only thing in anime that has truly creeped me out is the last episode of Berserk. I haven't seen most of the stuff Mr. BingwordsVoyeur listed though so maybe I should get on that.

I still defend that Shinji is a good character.

Hell, EVA is a great show - but either you'll hate it or it'll turn you into fucking a weirdo.

Anyway, does Tokyo Ghoul get good?

you pretty much summed up the entire show in 3 words.
i didn't think it was 'bad' per se but it definitely doesn't get better as it goes on.

i've been watching Eureka Seven all week. i don't normally get into shounen/mecha stuff but this is nicely done, not overly cheesy/unbelievable like Gurren Lagann and not as mentally debilitating as Eva (although i love Eva, and GL has its merits)

I'm pretty sure when they first dubbed it they released the first couple of episodes attached to the front of a cereal box or a magazine (fo serious) and I remember watching it at the time and deciding that I would rather shoot myself in the face than sit through another minute. The hate was real. It was a dub though, maybe I would like it more now.

this is coming from a hardcore anti-dubs nazi but i would say give the subs a shot before passing final judgement. it's not for everyone but a dub can wreck any good show either way.

Let's start a Dub/Sub argument!

I happily watch whatever version is available. Honestly, if I like the show i'll watch both versions twice anyway. I think it's because Anime wasn't super available to buy when I got interested in it when I was like 10, so I had to take what I could get so i've probably been desensitized. The first time I saw Cowboy Bebop was mixed between Dubbed and in Japanese. I honestly care more about it being Translated correctly. And it totally depends on what you're watching, bitching about dubbed Dragonball is super lame.

There are certain shows that are so good dubbed that I can't watch them subbed, like FLCL or Cromartie High School. Or old over-the-top shit like Mad Bull or Violence Jack.
I am all for translators localizing, to an extent, the subs...I dislike reading them when they're super proper and stiff. Same with manga.
I also give the dub a shot sometimes just so I won't have to hear "HM HM HM...OMOSHIROI..." for the billionth time. Sometimes I'm convinced that there are only like ten different voices in all of Japan.

Yeah, I'm definitely a subs man and I certainly don't mind when the translator takes some liberties, especially for the benefit of humour. One of the biggest things I have against dubs is that when it is translated into english and given an english voice actor sometimes the tone and feel of the characters are changed substantially. Not just in the timbre of the voice but also in things like inflection which we have a good grasp of despite not knowing the language. I think that is one of the reasons why you should just stick to whatever you started watching first, unless it really sucks.
I think the language barrier itself has more to do with liking subs than the subs themselves though. I would even go as far as to say that not knowing the language probably helps me enjoy anime a lot more than I would if I did because it gives me a handy way around terrible voice acting and dialogue that a native speaker would latch on to. I mean, a lot of shounen stuff is packed full of dumb slang that I would potentially find jarring or annoying. Something I constantly feel left out on though are Japanese word puns, they just don't translate at all.

This is definitely what I've always thought.

I've always dug Anime simply for the animation, i'd rather watch a Technoland that's been drawn rather than seeing actors infront of a green screen. Though primarily, i've always found it fascinating how Japanese culture re-articulates Western Culture and uses it in a certain style. It's not so I can feel like some weird Otaku, I just can't find those interests anywhere else that scratches the itch. Everything else is a bonus in my books.

Still, I am going to watch it in it's original form and I always like to have subtitles on regardless of the language, i'm weird that way I guess. But whinging over a TV show, song, film or game in general is pretty lame.

Yeah, this is a big one.
Personally a lot of my enjoyment of anime is to do with Japanese language and cultural conventions, I've studied it a little bit and can sort of use the subs as a guide to follow the language i can't translate, and i find it hugely rewarding when i can watch something and work out the actual intended meaning, humour etc. You can't draw absolute parallels between a lot of Japanese and English words so if I'm only left with the English side of things as with a dub I feel like a lot of the meaning is lost. In principle, I prefer the idea of using subs to complement the audio so that people who don't speak Japanese can follow the dialogue and develop an understanding of the content rather than using a dub to approximate it in a form that's easier to digest. Because of this I just can't properly enjoy dubs, even with good ones like FLCL and Cromartie I still preferred the subs. Likewise, I've always been more into anime than manga because with manga you can't really get the equivalent of a 'sub' so the meaning can still be lost a little.
This is totally just my preference though, i'm not saying one or the other is better i just personally don't find enjoyment in dubs anymore, but everyone enjoys anime for different reasons anyway which is great.

Also i like listening to people like Hiroshi Kamiya, Kana Hanazawa, Satomi Aria.... there are so many Japanese VA's worth gushing over.

^ This is pretty much exactly what I think, except I probably understand a lot less Japanese than you. But yeah, to each their own. My mother is a teacher for a bunch of ten year olds, and I've been to their class a couple of times and shown them Norwegian dubs of Miyazaki films. So in that regard, dubs obviously have their place as well. The look on those kids faces while watching Totoro for the first time was priceless.

I watched Wolf Children which was really amazing. I thought it was going to be a lot more light-hearted, it was pretty dang heavy instead. Effing stellar soundtrack, too.

I then downloaded Boku no Pico, just because I'm an anime enthusiast and feel I should be well versed in all the well known shows. I totally thought the shota stuff was gonna be more like hinted at....NOPE. It's fucking hentai. I didn't make it past the opening credits. Seeing the older guy jack off a lil' kids penis was too much for me.....

I'll tolerate subs if I absolutely have no choice, and often times it rarely takes away from viewing for me, but if there is a dub out I will usually watch that and prefer it. Have yet to run into a dub I hate, except for maybe Kill la Kill.
