I have access to free legal advice and representation because I go to the University of Florida and their Law School ain't nothin' to be fucked with! Once a year, UF puts on a music industry and Entertainment law conference, some decently big people come out, A&Rs for Sony, Capital and other labels, as well as established Attorneys in this field. There is also stuff for musicians to attend. My singer and I have attend some of this event before. Then there are shows in town related to the event, A&R people attend, etc. Well, we have played one of those shows before. But I digress, this company we are working with knows how the industry is changing and is not holding on to a dying business model. This is an open-ended agreement on our end, we can cease working with them when we choose, and are not contractually obligated to stay with them IF (big if) a bigger label wants us, or wants us to do a split, whatever. Our agreement is exclusively related to this one EP, with an option for another. They aren't paying for the recording off the EP, we already recorded it, it just needs mastering, which we are going to do out of pocket. We have no way to become in debt to this little record label. Essentially, we have about 1/2 of "record deal". They distribute, and promote the EP and us, as well as increase our booking contacts (and booking is still our responsibility). So, what I reasonably expect is that our online presence will increase, leading to more "likes" and "fans" on certain websites, that our EP will find it's way to different online music reviews, a couple of interviews, a couple thousand sales on Itunes or whatever, and some decent gigs.

this is pretty much the EXACT deal my band are discussing at the mo :)

So guys....the heated to MIC or to DI debate......I have a new wrinkle added in my indecision.....

I'm now playing on a fEARful cab. The design is to be as uncolored as possible...so it's kinda like just plugging into a monitor. Which is awesome. I want the FoH to sound EXACTLY as my amp does behind me....and I want that to sound exactly like it does at home. I know the big argument to not DI is "I spent all this money for my cabs and they are an integral part of my sound"...but that's a bit moot for me. Add to that the difficulty of MICing a fEARful since the 15", 6", and horn all play different freqs.....and I'm questioning my allegiance to the MIC. :idk:

Well yes and no. Where is your DI coming from in your signal chain? If it's on your amp, then it's probably a line out after the pre and before the power section. So the question on whether to mic or not is whether you feel that the cab AND power section of your amp provide any coloration that you want to come out in the FOH. For me, using a relatively low power tube amp, DI'ing is just not option, as I get a good portion of my overdrive from the power section of the amp.

If your power section is basically transparent, then yes, I guess it really is moot.

Yeah, that's a good point. I don't want it missing the power secion in my Mesa Bass 400+.

I've got no problems with good DI boxes. Stu Brooks uses a DI live and he still sounds like he's tearing dimensional boundaries away
Maybe the best course of action is to try it out. Only dirt-related issues come to mind.

Also, saw your fEARful building post, and it got me motivated to get one myself! Thank you! :D
Could you tell me your experiences with and without the tweeter? I'd love one for my clean sound, but I pretty much have the dilemma you had when building, so I'm not sure what to build.

For sure, man. I posted a clip somewhere lost in the thread with me using a MicroKorg synth playing around with the tweeter. I just built the control on the side of the cab. So it's as easy as tweaking a pedal just to go to the cab and turn it up or down. They're great cabs. I highly recommend them.

Sousie - Just like said bigchief said above, it depends on the coloration you have/might want from your amp and cabs.

I used to send just a DI from my Mesa, but the DI was set to PRE Eq. I realized after a lot of gigging and going back over tapes of the shows, I was missing some of the tone from my EQ and amp/speakers that I wanted in the FOH.

My solution from that point on, has ALWAYS been to mic AND DI. I find I get the best and most "toneful" combo by a mix of the 2 signals.
The clear, boomy lows from the DI and the punchy, warm "alive" sound from the mic.

Exactly... THAT is a perfect amp you'd want to experiment with mic'ing.

Yeah. I don't want to lose ANYTHING from that amp and I totally use the EQ on it. My ignorant ass just assumed the DI out from the amp took the exact same signal being sent to the cab.

We will compare notes then.

So, about the DI vs Mic deal. I am totally in the MIC MY SHIT BRO camp. I mean sometimes a situation occurs and it would be more detrimental to throw a hissy fit for a mic. Lastnight the venue I played at had an issue with a Mic for me, so I was to be DIed, the dude saw my ZOOM B3 and asked about running through it. So anyways I hear I sounded good out front. I definately substituted OD for Fuzz on some parts just so I didn't have the DI Fuzz unpleasant highend.
But I have a freaking EXPENSIVE ASS Orange Tube Head (it doesn't have a DI, a part of my no DIing me plan) and a decent 2-12 cab. So I was thinking about bringing my own mic and stand to gigs for my bass rig. My question is, what happens if I bring a XLR-to-1/4" converter with me to run my MIC into the DI box? Will I have some sort of line/instrument level issue?

I don't think I'm following you.... so your mic has a 1/4" on it rather than an XLR?

No I mean, if the soundguy has a DI box for me to use, what if I put a 1/4" converter on the Mic and plugged that into the DI box?
