I played through the demo of Life is Strange. (Didn't have the whole game downloaded like I thought we did.) Now, I'm not sure if I should buy it. I didn't like the whole rewind thing and it came off like a big angst fest. Am I dismissing it too soon, or is it maybe not for me? I love dark-freaky-mindfuck. But, the demo felt more like an anti-bullying campaign.

like i said it goes from weird and cutesy to a mind fuck over the course of the game. i'll admit episode 1 was cringey.

Yeah, not really the type of game to benefit from a demo. The rewind time part gets a lot more interesting in later chapters, I'd say.

2016 Games Of The Year
1) Rocket League. Over 250 hours into this, last I checked. Still feel the thrill of a good hit, still laugh at some crazy moments, still feel the remorse of a missed shot or save.
2) Hyper Light Drifter. Retro Zelda nostalgia with skill based action. Have to be willing to die just to learn a little bit more of the boss attack patterns. The character gains new abilities throughout the game, but you yourself gain knowledge and skill on how to overcome all enemies. There is no explicit story laid out or any dialogue, but you learn what is happening through exploring and some quite abstract cut scenes. Looking forward to revisiting this sometime, something I rarley do in single player games.
3) Life Is Strange. I wasn't prepared for this experience. I grew attached to the main characters, so when the story twisted into something dark, and then went even darker, it affected me in ways games never do. I will never forget my time with this game.
4) Inside. A dark journey. Another game where you learn about the story as you pay attention to the world. The short length felt good.
5) Guacamelee. Sort of a Metroidvania mashup with a brawler. High level of baddassery to complete some of the fights and platforming near the end of the game.

Notably absent: Gears of War 4. The Gears series has been one of my favorites in the last decade. Easily spent a thousand hours playing online with friends. Much harder to enjoy the experience jumping in solo with randos or bots on your team, not working together and getting steamrolled by the other team. Can't enjoy Horde mode with the randos dropping out and not getting replaced. The campaign was pretty good though, and had some really awesome moments with an older character. I will play more of this one and the next games.

Worst Game of the Year: Star Wars Battlefront. The game is beautiful and has all the right sounds, just plays like shit. None of the guns felt good, and aiming down sight does nothing but essentially allow the enemy to kill you quicker. Why the hell would you have stormtroopers running around without helmets? That has been patched recently, which may be the one good fix they did. Every patch fixes one thing but screws up like 3 others. Fighter Squadron was a good mode, but there were times the Millenium Falcon and Slave 1 were basically unbeatable, then the A-Wings were impossible to shoot down, then last time I played the X-Wings are overpowered and the Tie Fighters are even easier to shoot down than ever. This had so much potential that has just been fucked by bad ideas and balance. What pisses me off the most is that I will probably jump into the next one and hate it too.

Worst Game Runner Up: Batman Arkham Knight. Great story, but fuck your batmobile platforming and tank action.

MOST ANTICIPATED GAMES FOR 2017
Mass Effect Andromeda - Loved the original trilogy. Minor reserve how this game will turn out.
X-Com 2 - Loved the first one, and just picked this up on sale, won't get around to playing it for a few weeks.
Axiom Verge - Metroid throwback.
The Witness - Heard it is great too many times to ignore.
more Rocket League - I can't stop.
more Gears of War 4
Ori and the Blind Forest - in my backlog, got it free on Xbox
Child of Light - same as Ori
Mario Party 2 and 3 - planning on reacquiring a N64 to have some family game nights
Child of Light is great. Short, definitely on the easy side, but was ~12 hours of my life very well spent.
Haven't played many of the others much, but agreed on Battlefront, I played it at a friend's house when it came out and felt immensely sorry for him having purchased it at full price

if i had to name a GOTY it would be Zero Time Dilemma. i love the Zero Escape series, and escape room puzzle/visual novel is probably my favourite genre mashup ever.
others that i played the whole way through and really enjoyed: Project Diva X (weakest entry so far though), Megadimension Neptunia VII, Nights of Azure, Deemo, Catherine (mostly weeb shit, really, but whatever).

i also tried a shit ton of popular titles from the last few years after being late to the PS4 game. not the worst by any means but probably the most disappointing for me was the Witcher 3, i just could not get past the movement mechanics and thought a lot of the character dialogue was really draining. not really my preferred genre to begin with so i get that i'm the minority, it was just a bit astonishing.

most anticipated 2017 releases: Persona 5 (dual audio DLC fucking confirmed), Project Diva Future Tone (this will consume my entire year at minimum), Danganronpa V3, Cyberdimension Neptune, Nights of Azure 2, Blue Reflection
+ i'm gonna burn through Shin Megami Tensei IV and Apocalypse soon. feels like it's gonna be a pretty good year.

Isn't Battle Garegga already out in Japan? I haven't seen anything about a US release...

Where's my Ubusuna news and Radiant Silvergun steam/ps4 port :(

RE: Star Wars Battlefront. Finally tried it out last night and I'm disappointed. I figured the Ultimate Edition would be worth it for some couch co-op, but half the maps/modes are online only. Should've saved the $20 for Metal Slug Anthology.

Haven't tried any games yet though, just videos. Minecraft must be amazing in VR.

I might be getting it for Resi 7. I have to be in control of the movement or else I get sick (like all those rollercoaster-type games make me hurl). I will try to unbox it very carefully so that I can return it after I'm done playing RE7.

I've got lots of VR devices at work, I often have an headset on the top of my head whn coding/testing stuff :). More Vive/Oculus than mobile stuff though.

I'd still not recommend the current generation for everyone because setups and sensors are messy but the tech is definitely here to stay... We're just scratching the surface now.

Depends on what you're looking for. I bought it for couch co-op, but a huge portion of the maps and modes are online only. Plus it didn't feel 'Star Wars-ish' enough for me, more like Call of Duty with lasers and John Williams. I traded it away almost immediately. But it's super cheap right now so you could give it a shot :idk:

I wish I would've tried Battlefront II from GoG instead.

I actually played that one quite a bit (Battlefront) and as a "hardcore" gamer who's not really into shooters and not really into Star Wars I still enjoyed it a lot. Good game, in my opinion.

so since we had the baby i bought a ps4 and final fantasy xv and world of final fantasy.
but i often hold the baby to get baby to sleep and that doesn't cater well to a controller.

been cursing through iOS versions of the games.

beat final fantasy v.
beat final fantasy vi (god the d-pad was rubbish)
and today...
starting final fantasy tactics: war of the lions.

it's the psp remake. the fucking animated fmv is beautiful.
