This is the best ILF scandal I've ever seen.

Go Dwarfcraft.

Go Tom Dalton.

Devi. Make like, reverb and delay pedals or something. Release a whole line of different bit crushers. No fuzz or make completely new circuits.

I've supported a Kickstarter before and have no problems with them. It was the one where Nelson Guitars wanted money so he could retool his workshop to make hardware in house. And I just donated money. No perks except his un-dying gratitude. And I enjoy his un-dying gratitude everyday. I just liked what he was trying to do and thought I'd help in some small way. It wasn't a very big donation. But a Devi Kickstarter.....Not on you're fucking life!

Knew I wasn't the only one who viewed the console idea as a gimmicky waste of time...and money. :(
At first glance it seems like a cool idea...but the more I think about it, the less practical it becomes for someone like myself as proprietary accessory-based designs are the first to become obsolete and abandonware. Then there's the matter of serviceability and (lol) legacy support.
I want my "keepers" to be future-proof as possible. Assuming the cartridges/modules would have been SMD inside...they'd be good as disposable.

But I'd rock tf out of a Captain Coconut :idk:

Didn't Z.Vex kinda try to do the Console-thing with the Inventobox? Well, that didn't go particularly well...

The idea of and plug & play effect modulars is not a new idea, it comes up in one way shape or form every ten years or so.

Plus, pedals already are kind of a modular thing anyway, the console being your overall guitar rig and pedalboard setup, into which you plug pedals into or out of.

Yes, it's an important issue.
Millions now living will never die.

It's an important album.
It is incredible.

If we're talking '90s post-rock, I like it better than Spiderland, TBH.

IIRC the zvex thing wasn't a modular, it was more of a rapid prototyping tool. What you wind up putting together anyway, just in a single package...a breadboard with some I/O (jacks, switches, don't know if it had a buffer, etc), power and I think some control (pots, switches) facilities

hey mudfuzz, what happened to your little list. I think it had some good examples (I had Elctra MPC's which we affectionately called "atari cartrdige" guitars back in that day, korg PMEs...I think the saving grace there wasn't the format, but they had some interesting units and the typical units were pretty high quality, I had Ibanez UE and Arion units, but those were almost anti-modular..integrated multis...never owned the Line 6 things - did they finally die off>)

good list htough

I think she'd have to farm that work out. She doesn't really have a lot of technical acumen, I think that's why she pretty much did fuzzes. They are essentially misbehaving amplifiers. Most of her offerings seem to be variations on a theme and are well, basically, circuit-bends.
I believe it was Charlotte who started calling it "guerrilla engineering" to give it a stronger image as deliberate process.

I think trying to transfer that sort of approach is one of the things that probably bit Devi in the ass with software . In SW kludgey stuff just tends to break, run poorly, and not scale very well. Which would explain why she gets some sort of prototype up, but rarely completes things.

:)* Pretty much it yeah [I keep editing down everything I say in the thread, I just dislike how the whole issue is and that I've watched it grow for years..], and moog, it all sort'a started there if you think about it. I'm pretty sure the Line6s did die off.. the last thing I saw on them was some one turning them into bit crushers and selling them on ebay :idk:

We got one of those before they were released and I am pretty sure Ben got frustrated real quick and only used it once or twice. Keep in mind that it is our job to prototype stuff and even he didn't care for it, so it certainly wasn't going to be a hit with the DIY crowd.

Proprietary modular formats are destined for obscurity unless they're not, like Eurorack taking over modular synths and API's "500" format reaching surprise dominance for studio gear after decades of being a pretty-much one-company deal. The Console was a decent concept for engineering cost efficiencies for user and manufacturer. In someone else's hands, who knows?

Inventobox seemed like a disaster of non-design, basically an easier way to force the user to breadboard their own fuzz. Very few people would find that satisfying but would be intimidated by full DIY.

I liked Charlotte. I can't say much about Devi in the "she was always/nice/kind/etc to me" but Charlotte was always such a pleasure to work with. I think that was the Golden Age of Devi-owned DEFX, when Devi had a buffer/PR someone answering phone and e-mail. Props to Charlotte. Real Talk.
