Joe Jackson - Night And Day
Joe Jackson - Blaze Of Glory
In a recent thrift store haul, I picked up the Mike's Murder soundtrack. I hadn't thought about Jackson in a while, outside of the occasional blessed hearing of Steppin' Out on the in-store play at CVS. The first side has some fun Night and Day-era also-rans. Second side is all instrumentals. Good stuff. It's reminded me to go back and listen to the classics as well.

"Cosmopolitan" and "1-2-3 Go!" are my favourite tracks of "Mike's Murder".
Joe Jackson did a few really nice records in the last few years. I can really recommend his last one, "Fool" and especially "Fast Forward" that has 16 songs that were recorded in four different studios in Amsterdam, Berlin, New York and New Orleans.

Jimi Hendrix -- More Experience
The first album I ever bought (at Rasputin Records on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley):
Built to Spill -- There's Nothing Wrong With Love
Aimee Mann -- I'm with Stupid
The Breeders -- Last Splash/Pod
Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 -- Lovelyville/Hope It Lands/Strangers from the Universe
Sam Cooke -- All of it, but especially Night Beat and Live at the Harlem Square
De La Soul -- Buhloone Mindstate (add the song Stakes Is High and it would probably be the best hip-hop album ever)
The Feelies -- Crazy Rhythms
Parliament -- Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome
Little Peggy March -- Ultimate Compilation
Blondie -- Parallel Lines
The Go-Gos -- Beauty and the Beat
Can -- Ege Bamyasi
Talking Heads -- Almost everything. Particularly Remain in Light/More Songs About Buildings and Food/The Name of This Band Is....
Violent Femmes -- Violent Femmes
Pixies -- Surfer Rosa/Bossanova
Big Star -- 1 Record/Radio City
Bill Withers -- Just as I Am/Still Bill
Harry Nilsson -- Pandemonium Shadow Show/Nilsson Schmilsson
Miles Davis -- Bitches Brew

I pretty much love all their albums. But that first one is like
Also.... lots of those albums are favorites for sentimental/emotional reasons. There's plenty of music that
I love, but sometimes an album comes into your life at a particular point in time and resonates so much it
feels like it was made just for that particular moment.
Which is what happened for me with There's Nothing Wrong with Love and I'm with Stupid. They both came
into my life at a particular moment of deep heartbreak and felt like they'd been written just for that moment.
Also... the Little Peggy March... it's funny how you can hate a sappy song on the radio... and then you experience
heartbreak and all the sudden that same sappy song can bring you to your knees.
Forgot to add things like:
The Maytals
The Specials
The Flamin' Groovies

I have the same fondness for Peggy, but I'm attached to this somewhat similar compilation (not a dud in the bunch). Her voice was so powerful, and I think her only heir in that department was Jenny Toomey, who had a similar brassiness that not many others had.
And I'll also add the late & lamented Phil Ochs LP "Greatest Hits" (actually his final LP produced by Van Dyke Parks) to whatever pile I'm amassing at this point:
Despite being a huge VDP fan, I never really listened to any Ochs other than "Rehearsals for Retirement" which I snagg'd inna dolla bin
looking forward to this
also, i'm outta here b/c i find the very idea of reducing my listening history to 20 favorites existentially terrifying
