Damn I was worried there wasn't gonna be an answer to the Depth Charge vs B:Assmaster question. Though I never realized it was a Brassmaster I always thought it was like a modded tonebender. Any other opinions from people who tried both? After all: Paul Barker>>>Trent Reznor ;)

I'm not sure of specific artist outside of Trent because I was looking for something super specific, but I know a lot of bass players have used them. Jeff (Mr. Excane) might know a bunch. Jeff why the fuck haven't you chimed in here? COME ON!

Obviously I know who Paul Barker is and I strongly disagree. I'd take NIN over Ministry any day of the week.

So, yea it's good for metal, industrial (across all spectrums IMO), and rock. Not the best for doom imo, but you can make it work if you mess around with the gain and tone knob. It has amazing voicing. I bet with a good envelope filter, you could get some good funk going too. I need to try that. Never have.

Justin Meldal-Johnsen has also used one in the past (he's the one that told me Trent uses it). I think it was with NIN though. Not sure if he used it with Blur or not??

I'm sure it's been more widely used, but I haven't looked into that on a larger scale because I like it so much.

Doesn't JMJ have a custom Malekko pedal based on the Brassmaster?

I personally find industrial sounds work better for doom than "doom" sounds. Maybe I have a weird idea of how doom sounds but like all doom sounds the same to me now anyways, might as well sound bad. You feel me?

I'd still take Ministry (PRE-DSOTS ofc) over NIN anyday. Not like I'm dissing them or anything, they have put out some killer stuff but ministry has that raw edge NIN will never get.

Plus they doom:

Btw I recall there was both a silicon version and a germanium version of the Malekko. Do you know which one you had tried? Idk if I remember right but I know the pink was different.

The Diabolik? I think it is a production pedal and has been for a while

Yea that one. I know it's production. I simply meant it was for him, or based on his input or something. At least that's how they seemed to market it back when.

(Bass player) I’ve owned the Depth Charge and also had a B:assmaster germanium on loan at one point, not at the same time, but I preferred the Depth Charge by a smidge. I’ve never completely bonded with any octave fuzz on bass though, also had a Foxx tone machine clone that I liked for a bit because it was so wild, though you lost a lot of booty with it. But it did make some gnarly sounds. I also wonder if I wouldn’t have preferred a B:assmaster silicon, because i almost always prefer silicon/LED/other over germanium, but that’s just me.

Even if they don't oh well.. [if I was into the brass master sound that is the one I would want, the demoes always sounded the best to me] I just think it's nice to see them back, they were one of the first of the companies that made fuzzes to show up in guitar mags in the early 90s offering something other than boss and dod and boss and ibanez and boss and kong and boss and boss.. I remember really wanting a yardbox and ended up a few years later getting one of those horrible vox tone benders.. I sometimes miss that horrible vox tone bender..

It has to work for your specific type of music/taste for sure. I've always loved the Depth Charge but it does not work for everything for sure. If it did, I'd have it on my board still. Which, I did earlier this week for something specific, but now I've switched again cause I needed to.

I know Justin did a branding thing, but he also used a ton of other stuff. Both brands are fine IMO. I just prefer the Depth Charge over the Brassmaster personally. Like Mud though, I'm not huge on octave fuzzes unless they are voiced just fucking perfect. The Vault is the best IMO out of all of them.
