just the default round brushes, though I should probably start making some nice ones seeing how I'm gonna use it more often from now on!
I use a few filters and a shit-ton of layers though. mostly splatter, cutout, reduce noise (artistically rather than as noise reduction), high-pass, unsharp mask and a couple others. but they're on so many layers on so many blending modes (I like darken and lighten a lot) that it starts to do stuff. not to mention all the masking and overlaying I do. such as makign a mask out of everything that's dark and applying a
nice grungy texture to it!two or three selective texture overlays later and it adds a lot of detail without a brush-stroke (though I do a lot of those too).
at the very end I do subtle splatter at 30-40% opacity, cutout on a duplicate and darken blending, reduce nosie at max strength (bug zero everything else), then sharpen and contrast. those last steps make a cruddy mix of photographed textures, 3D and hand-scribbled shapes into a more oil paint feel.
I tried doing trees today. I suck

I do them as unsaturated as possible so that when I eventually do everything monochromatic, I wont have ugly surprises
I spent way too much time on the trees here. trying to find out what works in a cartoony way
