Arcing ropes of jism.
I dunno—I guess there aren't too many that bug me that bad. Other than "shimmer," just because it sounds like shit both figuratively and literally, AND reminds me of P&W. Oh and "tone stack." Fuck some tone stacks. Just call it plain old "tone," or EQ if you're feeling fancy. Something about "stack" just sounds excruciatingly bro-ridden.

Tone on a knob label bugs me. So I can get down with what you're saying.

I guess if there's just one knob to cover tone, that doesn't bug me so much. I think just adding "stack" in there is a completely unnecessary thing that people say to sound important. Case in point, "tone stack" is ALL over TGP.

And froze it. And it sounded better. And used it as canon ammunition. And so many things. He's a god to all of us.

Spin that cylinder, here's three bullets from recent issues I just pulled up:
"The graphics are killer and the build quality is specified for post-human longevity."
"Each of the tones were obviously crafted with great attention to detail and for that reason, I'll declare it a winner."
"In a world obsessed with all bells and whistles and tap tempo and submenus, stripped-down pedals like this one feel somewhat refreshing."
(Only somewhat).
"Works great at lower volumes, and has controls to make it sound good on any rig."
(Any?)
Are these actually real? They must get paid per word I guess.
Yep, all from pedal reviews in TR in the last few months, I just randomly flipped and selected them in a lovingly curated manner in < 30s.

Shimmer sounded good...on my Lexicon Vortex built before many of today's guitarists were born.

Yeah shimmer in Vortex != shimmer in modern pedals...

Nope, in the Vortex it's a monster.
But any effects unit that has amplitude modulation is my friend.
"Shimmer A utilizes a cross-resonance modulator feeding a
stereo tremolo, which is, in turn, sent to both the outputs and
the inputs of a stereo echo pair. The tremolo in this effect is
mono compatible."
"Shimmer B has a stereo resonator feeding a stereo amplitude
modulator, which is, in turn, sent to both the outputs and the
inputs of a cascaded echo. The output of the cascaded echoes
is sent to an auto-panner before it too is sent to the outputs."

I've always associated "stack" with the fact that a lot of equalizer circuits are schematically drawn in a somewhat vertical configuration against a largely horizontal signal flow. I can see though how the term would mutate into boobs, boxes and bills spewing from from someone's festering gob when taken out of that context.

Oh totally. Taken too far out of context though, it becomes so bro-ish. "How's the tone stack in that Bogner sound, bro?"

Oh man, I guy who works in another department is into guitars and sometimes we bullshit gear. Very into the JP Music Man guitars, uses a lot of TGP approved lingo.

"Fat", "warm", and "touch-sensitive" can also take a hike. I got yer fat, warm and touch sensitive right here, buster.
I like "chewy" because I am frequently hungry while I am playing music and I would like it if more sounds were edible.
What about "white whale". That's another annoying term for the "holy grail". LOL
These terms go hand in hand with the ILF, TB or TGP views of blowing a certain builder. If it's popular with a few on ILF, then everyone is going to go ape shit and before you know it, their whole board is covered in shit that's probably super unusable to make music, but it's killer anyway somehow. Maybe...err...yea. TB is the same way. OMG blah, blah blah is coming out with a pedal. I must get on bend knee and received the money shot.
Fucking mason jars full of jizz. That's what this all equates to.
A great way to pick out a pedal that will actually help you make music (that most of us don't have the opportunity to do anymore) is actually to go to a music store and play a pedal. That's how I discovered Tone Benders, ZVex & Russian Muffs. So different from reading a magazine about it or hearing a bunch of people raving on a website. In my town, Guitar Center drove all the small shops out and then left, but Raleigh, the next town over, still has a couple of decent independent stores. You probably can't get the latest Dr. Scientist, but they at least have Earthquaker, Catalinbread, EHX and some other odds and ends.
