I found out a local shop had a Tonal Recall. So.... I ubered there after work and bought it (between this and the minilogue that hasn't shown up yet I'm gonna be broke for the next six months). But this thing's amazing!! That ramp control is incredible, opens up allllll kinds of tones I couldn't get before.

So, how does it deal with being hit by a hot fuzz? The repeats sound very distorted. I can imagine it sounding a little mushy post gain.

That was the first thing I tried. I showed up ten minutes before the place closed, tried it out with a fat fuzzfactory to see how it'd sound, and bought it before the store closed. I haven't figured out the dynamics yet, it can be very clean, but it can also be very distorted. I haven't figured out how to get to be consistently either yet? I'm having trouble getting used to the controls on this, they have really weird tapers. Like, the mix goes from completely dry to completely wet, but the split between 50/50 wet/dry seems to be around 3 o'clock? On a memory man that point's really close to noon on the mix knob. So, there might be some user error going on.

Short answer: it can definitely stay clean with a hot signal, but the repeats do start to distort the closer you get to self oscillation. The memory man I had distorted in a similar way if you let the repeats get out of control. I haven't quite figured out the dynamics thing yet...

You might say I'm addicted to the D. These are also just initial thoughts. It's probably a winner. I just gotta give it some time.

How does it handle being hit by active electronics? Damn it, I wish I would have had this Elrick (has passive/active) before I flipped my Spectre. Curse my luck!

The tone knob actually also influences and works with the mix knob in different ways. I didn't want the repeats to get buried with the tone knob rolled back so any change on the tone knob influences the mix knob.

It should be pretty intuitive... but it's not really like anything else out there.

It really isn't like anything else I've played. I keep thinking about that first sentence on the product description: forget everything you know about analog delay. That's solid advice. This definitely doesn't behave like any other analog delay I've played.

I need to spend more time with this to get an intuitive feel for it (I've played essentially the same delay for the last five years, so, I'm unlearning some habits I picked up from that pedal). I can really see how you'd use 122 presets! It's definitely the most versatile delay I've played.

thx man! yeah one of my bigger fears (of many) on doing a delay is that it's an effect that is so personal to people. Just understanding that it's not going to be for everyone... It's not a DMM, not a DM2, it's a Tonal Recall. I really hope people approach it with an open mind. thank you for taking a chance on it.

I too have lots of love for the 616d. It's survived multiple purges of delays. I'm haven't a major struggle with ups right now. I've now missed it two days in a row. Sad face.

It's soooooo weird how personal delays are! The only thing that's more personal are dirt pedals. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be a rabid fan once I unlearn some habits from previous delays, and stop trying to make it sound like a DMM/616D/whatever.

Edit for story: One time a friend asked me to recommend him the ultimate dirt pedal and I told him that was too personal a question for me to answer.

I got to mess around with mine for about an hour today. As others have mentioned, it's a very different delay pedal. I'm not sure what to make of it yet, as I've only scratched the surface, but all feelings so far are positive. My only question is whether or not I'll be able to use all of the things it has to offer, but I guess I'll just have to dig in more and find out...

One thing that stood out to me after playing it was that as with the WV, I particularly enjoy its prettier, slightly more subtle settings. I know a lot of people really get into the fucked up, seasick tones, but the WV has this great sort of sheen thing it can do, and the TR can generate some excellent sounds in the same ballpark.

That's what I gathered from the coffee and riff with Joel and knobs. When he talked about pretty much just leaving it on all the time, meant to me that it is great for subtle richness. I wish mine would get here when I'm home. Missed ups again so now I'm waiting for Monday :grumble:
