I don't get it. Gavin whatshisface is a rad drummer, but all you can hear is the top skin on everything, with like an exponentially small decay. Pretty sure his skins are made of wet cardboard too. Then they are all tuned so that there is no discernible difference between his smallest tom and the floor tom. His kick drum may or may not be a floor tom laying on its side as well.

Albini generally annoys the shit out of me, but I'd like him to produce a porcupine tree album just to see if there is a good band lurking under the flaccid lettuce production.
Maybe Jack Endino could make them rad?

I have no problem at all with their later albums (from You Come Before You and onwards) but it's just something about the guitars (mostly) on Tear from the Red that I don't like. The songs are great though, so I've still listened to it quite a bit. But the sounds still annoys me.

I was actually trying to explain this to my chinese co-worker the other day while flailing my arms around frantically and totally ran our rental chevy cruze off the road.

I'm pretty sure that's how Gavin Harrison makes his drums sound, actually. It's like he's punching hams at best. He's still one of my favorite drummers though. :idk:

He's a great drummer and I never noticed anything wrong with his sound

or with the sound of the band

I mean you can'T fuck with the bass either, or the tone of it, although it's totally different from most of the stuff we seem to preach here. Colin Edwin is a badass

Yeah. I love him but jeez.

Their production even beyond the drums is awfully dead too.

It varies from album to album. Altough Grace for Drowning > All of Porcupine Tree. Fight me.

Porcupine Tree suffers from that thing that a lot of proggy albums suffer from where the production is really great but the instruments all sound like cheese-coated shit.

Some of it. I don't mind bands that sound like Camel. I really mind bands that sound like Dream Theater.

tHIS.

cAn we talk about how shitty the emperor albums are and how empire live ceremony is pretty much the only way to listen to them? Ive never understood why they felt the need to go all TRU CULT with the production when they are basically the steely dan of first wave norwegian black metal.

I thought Prometheus was good :idk:
I'm no expert on lofi black because the nekro production shits me, but is older emperor really that much worse than any of its contemporaries?
