I don't have any firsthand experience in P&W circles, but based on my online interactions and observations...those who identify as such and are most vocal about it (and everything else) range from stuffy and intolerant to downright hateful xenophobes. Very discomforting. Egos abound capable of making rockstars and divas blush. If the stated mission is to "lead others to God" then it seems to me inclusiveness and diversity would be a more effective approach than restrictions and constant finger-wagging, moral posturing etc.
As an outsider looking in, I see way too much homogenous/uniform/paint-by-numbers aesthetic for my liking...and it glaringly lacks the soul of gospel music.

That community and to a lesser extent JHS causes me to recall (what is my favorite bible phrase...even though I had to Google it) Matthew 6:5. To summarize: Heathens pray in public.
However, I won't go so far as to excommunicate individuals who identify with _ just because I don't. Different strokes for different folks applies.

Back in my youth our church music was limited to a piano and a choir, except for special occasions there was a guy who would break out his hammered dulcimer.

we had a lap dulcimer and a hammer dulcimer at church when I was a kid

guy who played em was super cool and taught me a ton about music.
Actually I probably wouldn't be into guitar at all if it wasn't for church peeps growing up.

that's not being said to validate P&W as a scene, granted I get a ton of chances to play doing more "christian" stuff, I don't think it's a music style or a gear style, and I agree with some of the above comments that some of the "This JHS double barrel is helping people get closer to God" is complete B.S.

Yeah, I think it's a good pedal idea too, but JHS is stupid and the pedal is ugly. It looks like a Black Cat fuzz, but without the sparkles and felines that make those pedals redeemable.

I played bassoon back in high school. And yes, I used to drop a mic down its bell and run it through my Morley Power Wah Fuzz and pretend to be Cliff Burton in the days before I got my first bass. Mine didn't have the big brass bell on top, it was a more modern instrument but still sounded great.

Re: SMT - there's nothing wrong with it if it's done right. It's just as easy to repair, in some cases it's EASIER to repair because you don't have to desolder component leads from the back side of the board, etc. Most semiconductor fab lines run SMT packages these days, so the quality of through hole parts is in decline in a lot of cases. Some things are just about impossible to find in PTH, like JFETS. No, SMT is great. That said, I tend to stick to PTH in drive and gain pedals and keep SMT for MIDI controllers and DSP pedals. Just horses for courses as has been said already.

It could probably be argued that through hole components were declining in quality since before the widespread adoption of SMT.

Makes sense in your choice of what technology to use for which type of pedal though.
