Exactly, this is emo music (or post-hardcore, whatevs) first, but it has elements of progressive instruments and musicianship.
Fun fact though, having verses, choruses, and more verses, doesn't preclude a band's being prog.

Well this comment applies to more than just TMV. It applies to a good section of the prog genre. It's become a descriptor of sound more so than it denotes actually pushing music forward.

WTF are progressive instruments? I don't think the word progressive belongs in this thread when you're relating it to what "prog" really is. I'm not saying that because of some antiquated notion of what bands like Yes or Rush or Jethro Tull or King Crimson did that we have to put absolutely everything under that microscope but you're omitting the forefathers.
The interesting thing about Pablo Picasso is that he understood art and could do what any of the classic artists could do. Then he branched forward.
In this thread we have a bunch of bands who, again, just didn't sound exactly like their predecessors. But they didn't do anything so mind boggling that I want to refer to them as "prog" whatsoever.
One man's opinion is all. I really enjoy lots of bands mentioned throughout the thread.

This is just my opinion, but they went a little proggy around the release of
A City By The Light Divided. I was more into the earlier stuff but I miss them too!

I love all their albums. They were my favorite post-hardcore/screamo band. (And, yes, I'm aware of ATDI.

) I can see a tinge of prog as they went on, just not enough to categorize them as such.

That's the thing, they pushed the envelope for post-hardcore, which is prog, in the context of post-hardcore. Personally? I'd rather have some really good musicians that can still manage to write melodies, verses, choruses, in a word,
songs, and know when to dial the musicianship back to let the song shine through. But they
can "go there" if they need to.

Is there a lot of color spectrum / migrant tendencies?

totally does out of context. Those are the last two Dear Hunter releases, which are way different than Acts I-III.

I'll wait for my pre-ordered vinyl, like a big snob I am
ps: saw The Dear Hunter in Vienna, it was fucking awesome. The new songs they played definitely sound good, not Migrant-y, still Acts. I don'T think they palyed anything from Migrant, but they did play a couple songs from Color Spectrum and they were glorious live
one of the best gigs I've been to in tha last year or two. And that's a lot of gigs to compare to... Also the best people. I get all emo when I hear their music now, been listening to all acts and Color Spectrum couple days ago and almost shed some tears of happiness

The above image lead me to watch a live performance by The Deer Hunter. That was my first exposure. Read a little wiki. I'm now intrigued. What's the best album to start with?

A lot of people will tell you Act II, but they're wrong. Its a full 75 minute progy adventure thats a bit cluttered with filler. Good stuff on their but not the best starting point.
Act III is their strongest overall, me thinks. Act I is awesome but a bit lacking in the production and not as fleshed out songs, but some of my favorites are on their (1878 is soooo good). If you want to hear their rawer side thats a good one.
The Color Spectrum... delve into if you like some of the Act material. Its an exercise in genres really. Im not familiar with Migrant but its fairly lame compared to their other stuff.

FTFY!
Not to be confused with experimental pop group Deerhunter or, for that matter, the lesser-known emo band Dear and the Headlights
The singer, Casey, used to be the singer in The Receiving End of Sirens (tREoS), who are also pretty okay, if less inventive musically

My vote goes to
Act II but, disclaimer, I'm not
that into them! Listen to the other guy over me LOL
