I'd love to record in some of the old churches around my town.
One of the cathedrals would be awesome.

Some of the regional town halls around the place would be alright too, I reckon.

I always dug that.

One of my favorite bands from ye olde college days were Cordelia's Dad, who did scruffed-up noisy electric (well, and acoustic, depending on the set) covers of old New England and Appalachian folk songs, most of which were pretty straight-up religious. It was pretty cool, because Tim, the singer, was an ethnomusicologist, so he could always tell cool stories about what the songs were about. I remember one in particular had been a really popular drinking song that the church adapted to fit its needs.
did we ever figure out who cordelia's dad was? he embezzled a ton of money and that's why she was poor before she left to be on "angel" right?

Good question... though the band was pre-Buffy (I'm OOOOOOOOOOOOLD, DUDE), so I think it was actually a Shakespearean reference...

obligatory joke

anyway... I've actually been in contact with a church guitarist, he has a blog i used to read quite a lot... anyway from what I remember, it was always a lot about U2 tones as an inspiration, transparent overdrives, lots of ethereal verbs and delays (yeah, lots of strymon) and boutique amps

And when Skully here said "it's not about how much the gear costs, it's about the songs" - unfortunately, i don't think it is. We've mentioned it - it's pop music. And i'm not the first to say it's similar to U2 for example. So it's another-band-inspired-pop-music. That, to me, instantly says it's not really about the songs :poke: :idk:

and I'm not saying all "worship bands" or church bands are the same. From what you've said, Skully, you might be well different  I just think there are some "lost" people playing some "lost" music, so they compensate for it by buying gear

Wow I checked out those links on page two - that is some big money being spent on those videos!!

While I can say it's not really my thing, if you remove the religious context it wouldn't be either as that style of music is just not something I have any interest in, but it's pretty fascinating how polished the production was on the songs/videos. I guess what I find interesting is like a lot of underground music, it has this huge following and it's something that most people have literally never heard of.... much like hardcore or metal sub-genres.

I too have noticed the worship gear avalanche on Instagram. Sometimes when I'm on the train I'll just kinda random search through images and I swear 85% of the pedalboards I come across are "worship boards". JHS, Strymon, and Eventide as far as the eye can see. Very little Metasonix or Black Arts though. :idk:
