+1 - That's exactly the reason I pretty much solely use clean channels, or even better, non-master-volume tube amps. If it does have master volume, I leave it wide open and get dirt the hard way.
That's one of the reasons I love pedals for dirt (and everything else). We play a lot of gigs with a common backline, and as long as I can dial in a fairly decent clean tone I know the gig will sound passable to good regardless of the gear in question.

Compressors don't really have much a use for me conventionally. Only time I've ever used one was as a boost.
Always on effects also have little use for me outside of recording. Live playing, I never have an always on effect for a whole show. Always vary that shit.
I also can't use traditional chorus. Weird funky detuned chorus, yes. Cheesetastic 80's sounding shit, noooo.

The Guyatone FL-3 mini pedal is awesome because of the resonance switch: only at 3 is it doing full jet plane. At one it's much more subtle and generally useful. Flanging became less of a novelty sound for me when I got that pedal.
