I'll just keep working and getting stronger until my metabolism slows down or I figure out the secret.

Come to think of it, what is your calorie intake? I was up to 3000 calories a day at one point, which is basically like an extra meal and a half a day; but really that extra meal felt more like the difference between being full for the day and feeling bloated before going to bed. :idk:

I don't know my caloric intake for sure since I eat mostly home-made foods. For breakfast I have a bowl of cereal or two slices of toast and jam with maybe a banana or a yoghurt. For lunch two or three hours later I might have a few spoonfuls of cottage cheese and a few biscuits. If there are mini pancakes I might have a couple with some butter and maple syrup. They're only small and I only have them when I can be bothered to buy them. For dinner I'll have whatever is being cooked by my mum or I'll cook myself something. We eat a huge variety of food, from sweet potato korma, spaghetti bolognese, chicken curry, roast chicken, baked potatoes and salad, bacon and egg, steak and pasta, etc. etc. It's not super healthy, fat-free food, but I don't intend to change from eating that type of thing for another couple of months because it's good food that was never the problem. Once I've hit the barrier where I'm not losing any more weight by just cutting down on my food intake, I'll start a proper diet. My intention is to do what my sister's boyfriend is doing, who is training to be a boxer. In the morning he'll basically boil a bunch of brown rice, fry a chicken breast, add some coleslaw, and eat about 8 mouthfuls throughout the day in two-three hour intervals. In the morning he'll have porridge and maybe something sweet but small as a treat closer to bedtime. He's lost over two stone in a really short space of time. He needs to be a very specific weight by a certain date so he's being strict.

vidret wrote:over a period as short as 2 weeks you might not see jackshit just because of water weights keeping you up OR down.

you mention wanting to put on muscle to help reduce fat loss - it sounds like you want to do both but you won't really do both efficiently (you can zig-zag, but that's mediocre according to most who have tried, including me).

Decide what you want to do first.

As far as the food goes chicken curry's okay but there might be stuff like.. more rice than you really need and fat sauce etc on it which ruins it (kind of), spaghetti is just a bad idea basically, steak and sauteed vegetables sounds okay as long as you don't gobble down beer with it :thumb:

To add - there's no way you'll be breaking the laws of physics unless you have a serious disease/thyroid issues etc (90% of people who think they have really don't - statistics made up while writing this).

Eat less and move around more and you WILL lose weight, no way around it. boxing is fucking awesome.

which brings me to:

MMA instructor = :thumb: started doing more MMA myself last week. MMA is very taxing when it comes to calories, i have no problem believing you actually ate 3000 kcals, i also have no problem believing you also burned it off when you added weight lifting to the mix. eat more  :hello:

The only reason why I thought I would have lost more weight by now is because my sister's boyfriend did when all he was doing was cutting back on eating huge amounts and drinking a bunch. Also, if I ever get a tummy bug for two weeks I lose a bunch of weight, and I've been trying to eat about that amount, just a little bit more. Whenever I was ill I would still eat even when I felt sick, just because I was that obsessed with food and in such a habit of it. You know what it can be like: we can eat and eat until we feel ill, and we'll hate ourselves for doing it but do it again the next day. I was like that. I'm surprised I didn't become even bigger. I imagine I would have as I became older and my metabolism gradually and naturally slowed down.

As far as gaining muscle as well as losing weight, I don't really care about losing weight. I should have clarified that I just don't want to be fat any more. I'm not fat-fat. I'm just not skinny like I should to be. I don't want to be skinny either, but I'd certainly take that over what I am now. Ideally I'd like to put on muscle mass, and thus weight, as well as losing fat. BUT... I trust you so if I had to choose which I wanted the most I would say lose fat, without a doubt. Muscle gaining can weight (geddit?!). I want to have a flat stomach again, to lose the love handles, the sagging chin, and whatever else that needs 'toning up'. I know you hate that word but whatever.

By the way, although I don't look like I've lost weight and my scales seem to be saying I've added weight, it was a warm day today and I was chopping up some wood in preparation for the winter. I decided to change into my shorts and when I did I automatically went to button them up... and they buttoned up! These are the shorts that two months ago would not button up comfortably. Now I barely notice them buttoned.

good man! how are the lifts progressing? :hello:

They are slowly getting up there. Not working out or being mobile for the last 8 years really slows up any gains. My core is WEAK!!

Right now im at:

Squat: 185lbs
Over Head Press: 90lbs
Bench: 145lbs
BentOver Row: 155lbs
DeadLift: 210lbs

Ive also started trying to do pull ups and dips to eventually build to Muscle-Ups. I'm also doing ab vacuuming workouts everyday.

This isn't meant as a "well, what should I eat then?!" angry comment, but what should I eat? Ha! Seriously, I thought that was an OK diet to be on as a progression to better things. Are you saying it's not a great diet because of what you taught me about combining meats and carbs, like bread and ham?

I won't try to put on any muscle. I've decided to aim for a fat loss program, using boxing, cardio, and just eating as best I can with my levels of motivation.

Sweet! don't ever lose that OHP! looks like they're all going pretty evenly to me, strong row. the deadlift should be able to kick it a couple of lbs more above the squat, but you've got a pretty golden ratio going there.

Yea its the only lift out of all of those that i just can not progress as fast as the other ones. I was stuck on 65lbs for a while and de-loaded a bit then got up to 85 and plateaued again. I finally did 90lbs this last sunday. I watched a bunch of videos to try to better my technique, which seemed to have worked. Im hoping to break triple digits on that here in a few weeks.

Overall, my weight increases are going slow but I dont care. Im just glad i fit into a Large shirt instead of barely fitting into a XLG! Some dude actually called me a "Skinny Bastard" haha. Its been 8+ years since ive heard anyone call me thin.

put some squats/jumps and pullups in there and try learning handstands - you'll be a ninja in no-time man. hand-stands are awesome.

Yes sir, squats is something I want to start doing as well. Im trying to find a way to do pullups as well. Im renting and it would be awkward to get one of those door way pullup bars and do that in front of the landlady haha.

Ive also watched this video by that guy Daniel recommended and Ive come to realize that im not gunna get huge, its just not my nature. Im 6 foot 130 and have a 26 inch waist. Im not stocky and broad shouldered or thick at all in my natural state. You can count all my ribs no problem. So im trying to formulate some plan that will best fit my genetics. Fuck being massive, I want strength/stamina/health. Best case scenario I look a little bit bigger but very defined more like a gymnast or an "athlete" which Im fine with. Also wanna build super ninja endurance. Im a ninja at heart, not a truck tire flipper. I love all you guys, im super emotional right now for some reason

Yes I think that too! They have the perfect platform to start putting on muscle with the proper diet and workout routine. I wish i was in those shoes!

I think after another 6 to 8 months of doing StrongLifts 5x5 im going to move on to this program.

Haha! Thanks man. If I have any issues I will definitely hit you up. I've been reading back through the thread and it seems like there's a bit of a brains trust happening with you guys, so I'm keen to tap into some of that knowledge once I can ramp it up a bit.
Right now though I'm taking it super easy. I'm way too ashamed to post numbers, but my goal isn't numbers, it is just to feel good again, and not like I'm half asleep and swimming through concrete all the time. I used to use exercise to ward of depression, and lately as I haven't had time and a lot of stress has crept back into my life, I'm certainly missing it. I made it through my first week though, and I gotta say, I'm feeling better already. :)
I'm gonna take my time with it for a few weeks though as I've had a lower back and a shoulder injury in the past 12 months and I'm paranoid about setting them off. I've also been quite fatigued lately as my baby daughter hasn't slept through in about a month now (fucking teething, grrr), so hopefully that shit settles down and I can hit this a bit harder. Also, I've only got dumbells, so I've been doing the same stuff, just using them. I'm gonna go out and purchase the necessary equipment once I get some funds together though.
But, yeah, I dig it. It's a cool program.
Once again, nice ones, Vid!
Thanks again for taking the time to put this all together.

Definitely! It must be tough putting on weight and mass when you're naturally quite skinny, but I've learned—though not through experience—that it's more than possible. You have to be strict and wilful in the same way an overweight person has to be in order to lose fat. Don't resign yourself to your genetics. The only thing is, because of your genetics, to get the same physique as someone who easily puts on mass you will have to work that little bit harder. I imagine I'll never be skinny again. Thinness was something of my youth and I'll never be athletic because I don't have the determination or the will power. I follow Cosplay a lot and this guy plays Wolverine in a short film. This is the physique I want. Notice that he's got a little fat and you can't see the ribs very much, but you can see the muscles in his shoulders.

vidret wrote:fat loss workout and muscle gain workouts can both be centered at improving strength but eating more or less. do strength as well, no matter what, you'll thank yourself later.

as for food, this example again: cereal+toast+jam+banana+yoghurt

they're all carbs. if you like it, that's fine and you can eat it, but don't go thinking a bunch of carbs is what you NEED to lose weight. you need energy of course, just saying your big breakfast with lots of ingredients is like all carbs.

yeah basically. protein + carbs or protein + fat, not fat + carbs.

like i said - if you WANT that breakfast - if that's what gets you through the day - do it. don't feel bad about it. i however know of too many people that eat shit they don't like because they think it's something they need to reach a goal, which is just a waste of energy when they could've eaten something that's probably better and they enjoy more as well.

Focus on strength—gotcha! I'm happy with that.

I always wanted to take up boxing for a lot of reasons. I did various martial arts as a kid but I feel like as an adult It might not jive with me so well. I get dizzy to easy and I dont want to risk any of the injuries that can come form two guys pounding on one another. I got no insurance, If I miss a day of work I get no doll hairs hahah
