I guess you can only crank every knob on an amp to 10 and play it for hours every night on tour for so long before it decides its done.

I dunno, he bailed on the Kyuss guitar (Maton?) after SFTD too. He seems to pretty consistently search out off-kilter gear, so he probably bounced on the V4/VT-22's after everyone and their mother was like "HOW DOES HE GET DEM TOANZ?!"

I haven't watched Over the HIlls in a while, I might have to dig it out and do some rig spotting.

Also, this show is fun. I like it. (aside from the aforementioned Millionaire, which I don't think JHomme should ever, ever sing.)

Kyuss guitar was an Ovation and then he moved to the Maton's (which is what it looked like he was using in that vid) Your right though, as soon as everyone figured out his tonal secrets he probably jumped ship on them.

I only got through the first 12 minutes of the live vid before my works security software caught me and kicked me out of youtube

*edit* Yup Kyuss was an ovation...

and QOTSA is "usually" a Maton (and sometimes a Tele it seems)

That's what I meant. The one before the Maton. KYUSS.

But anyway, now that we have DIRECT COMPARISON REFERENCE:

While I do agree that that is most definitely the best live line up I really appreciate the music that has come from the evolution of the band. And while the newest line up may not have the energy of the Josh / Nick / Dave uber-triumvirate, the musicianship and tone have evolved quite nicely and Josh has definitely enlisted some top notch talent.

P.S. God damn is Dave Grohl a fucking power house behind the kit. He's no technical monster but he plays with such ferocity and passion. Love it. Miss it.

Yeah, he used the Ovation in Kyuss and all the way up through the initial Songs For The Deaf tour. Used a Maton MS500 frequently back then also, featured in the "No One Knows" vid, first Maton I'd ever seen.

Switched over to the Maton BB1200 (semi hollow) after that, used it almost exclusively on Lullabies and the Over The Years...DVD, either that Betty Blue one or his Tobacco Burst sig with the scroll tailpiece. Saw it a bunch on the recent "Self Titled" album tour as well.

BB1200 also made appearances on Era Vulgaris along with several other guitars, a Tele and Ibanez Dan Armstrong being the most "normal" of the bunch that I noticed, but he really seems to favor the Motor Ave pictured below for the last several years. That's what he's using in that NPR ...Like Clockwork live show too, mostly.

As for amps, I have no clue when he stopped using the Ampegs live. He had 'em on the SFTD tour. Like D.O.S. mentioned, the Over The Years... performance has some great gear shots but Josh's amp is quick cut like a motherfucker. Need to rewatch that soon.

Agreed, Dave is so good when he sticks to drums. I kinda came of age during the Nirvana era and I love how he assaulted the kit with simplistic yet uniquely cool beats, esp on In Utero. SFTD, however, is hands down his finest moment ever put to tape, no question, such an incredible performance. He apparently recorded the cymbals tracks separately and had some real issues with the recording process but the end result was perfect. The sound of that whole record just boggles my mind, perfection. He killed it on "I Appear Missing" from the new record too. After Dave moved on and Lullabies was released, the first thing I noticed on that was the lack of a badass drummer in Queens and that made me sad.

Jon Theodore is no slouch tho, a truly amazing talent! I've been waiting for this moment since he left The Mars Volta years ago. Only record I truly love from those guys is Deloused In The Comatorium and Jon Theodore is the reason why, a straight technical BEAST on the drums. I think he'll be a perfect fit for Queens, hope they do some writing with him.

I think that is a very recent thing. I saw them on the S/T tour twice and he had them at both shows.

I think he brought them back for the S/T. I know he wasn't using them for the Lullabies tours/and the OtW DVD. Don't know about EV.

Yeah I gotta agree with Dos. Millionaire/You Think I Ain“t Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire needs that on the edge screaming voice to it. Josh's cool calm rock n roll voice doesn't fit.

So much THIS.

Im way too fanboy about them to say a single bad thing, but they have always been about being a brand new band every time while keeping the familiar ol' buddy vibe, to me anyways. I love the new album. toanz.
