yea the electribes are really dope. i have the EMX as well. the drum samples are okay to good, but u can coax them into dope with some fx n what not...lots of tweakability and the 5 synth channels dont hurt either. love the korg synths. the 8 bars (128 steps) of sequencer is really nice too. u could also look at the ESX or ES1 (sampling ones) or the ER1 (drum synth)

as for other hardware jawns? i would say mpc 1000/500, acidlab miami, jomox xbase shit, elektron machinedrum, arturia spark? maybe<.
theres also lots of vintage ones u could look at around ebay....a few that come to mind would be roland r8, any of the roland TR's, korg kpr77, alesis hr16b, etc etc. (theres lots more i cant think of atm)

i've never used the vermona, but i'd bet it sounds pretty badass...u would need a sequencer for it tho or something to control it (ipad maybe?) or some type of sampler jawn so u can sample the sounds from the vermona into it and sequence from there.

on a side note, figure is my favorite app right now. that and the ikaossilator. bathroom beats alll day when i should be working

edit: also check the MFB drum machines, (i think its 503, 522 and 502) they have some modular stuff as well that looks cool. super small drum machines, but the sound packs a punch.

Sticks knows what's up. For straight up sync'able drum machines, I really like the Roland TR-707 & 727 because they have MIDI, DIN & Trigger sync so they work with almost everything. They have good sounds, and they're very affordable. I got one of each for under $500 together a few years ago. They're simple to program too. For sampler / sequencers I really like the MPC-1000, and those can be had on the cheaps these days.

On the more esoteric pre-programmed vintage tip, the Korg KR-55 is kinda genius. All analog and pretty small, but it has something crazy like 96 patterns. Pretty fun little box. Seems like you may want something more programmable though.

Thinking about selling my tr-606 and buying this guy due to the clock in option (want to run it in time with a drone commander, gristleizer..that sort of thing.)
Would like to check one out in person but so far looks kind of groovy. Not sure about the actual durability but then again, the 606 is no tank.

I second Dr. Sticks' recommendation of a Roland R8/R8mkII if you're thinking used. One of the few pieces of gear I regret selling.

TR-727 has the best latin percussion ever, but with the 707/727/626/505/etc. you either like the sound or you don't. The R8/XR20/HR16/electribe/MPCs give you more samples to choose from, and the analog machines have their own sound but are tweakable.

I think it's a matter of finding the right combination of sequencer and sound that works for you.

Yes, that is awesome, possum. Havent done it yet, because I know right where my settings are for my live parts, and I just use an oxygen 8 or a behringer midi footboard to control it.

For SynthyWinter (starting Nov. 10) I will certainly do the upgrade.

Using a Drum Machine as a Sequencer... I could make sounds on the Machinedrum and do this, or that Boss Dr-202 has a Bass on it that sounds cool...

Thread hijack side question: Is it possible to use the Sequencer to trigger external stuff via MIDI?

It's got Midi In Out and Through so I don't see why not...

cool video, he used one of my favourite tricks which is drum machine into boss synth bass. yeah great for that 303 sound, but can also go subtle and funky. way fun.

drum machine as sequencer never gets old. the reverse is fun, too... running your programmed synth parts into the drum machine to get patterns you would never come up with (and no human could play).

sometimes i miss having a huge midi rig...

Yes Good Times for sure... I do that a lot with my MC-307...

I'm updating the Machinedrum now... I was on v1.33 and they are up to 1.63... I have the OG SPS-1 and it still surprises me how much stuff you can do with it, one of the upgrades allows automation off the effect parameters a la the triggers for each step... AWESOME...
