Help me spend some money

So I've come up with a plan to do it all.

Just a bump for an update, as my money has arrived and I'm come to a decision.

I had a long talk with the wife about how I basically want all of these things and I really don't want to have to choose between them. So I've come up with a plan to do it all.

I'm going to start looking for a Ric right now, and as soon as I find one in the 1200-1300 range, I'm buying it.

I'm going to sell a couple things to raise the money for the new pedalboard and power supply. My FS thread will be going up in a few minutes.

I am going to take a small chunk of the raise I'm getting with my new job and put it aside each paycheck, which will allow me to afford to buy a synth in 4 months or so. I'm going to try the Little Phatty first, and see if it does everything I want. If I find it too restrictive or it doesn't do absolutely everything I want, I'll just resell it and then start putting together the modular.

So while it seems that this whole thread is moot, it actually was a big help, because it helped me prioritize the order I'm going to get things.

So anyways, here we are 6 or so months later and I've got my Ric and my second board is all done. I just got my tax return, and have permission from the Mrs. to spend a chunk of it on a synth. The reason I'm bumping this thread is because I need your advice again. Here's my dilemma:

I was originally going to get a Little Phatty. Now that the Sub Phatty is coming out, I'm stoked because they get rid of the menus and make the whole thing knob-per-function. The down side is that they both have patching limitations. They only have 2 VCOs, only one LFO that only has 3 possible destinations. No real way of ever expanding it's capabilities. Plus sides, it's got DAT MOOG SOUND, and it's small and easy to carry around and play out with, and it has presets.

The other option was starting a modular. Plus sides - NO patching limitations whatsoever, you can literally control anything with anything. Basically infinitely expandable/swappable modules, you can get insanely close to DAT MOOG SOUND depending on which module maker you go with, can add to it gradually so cost is spread out. Down sides - big as fuck, hard to carry around and play out with, no presets, will end up being quite a bit more expensive once I've got a full system together.

I do plan on lugging this thing around a bit, whichever way I go. I have to be able to bring it to my bandmates's house for jams and recording sessions. Maybe even playing out every once in a blue moon down the road.

Nah, no offense to you or Mudfuzz, but I never really got why I would need multiples of the same bass. I'd rather have something different.

None taken I make no bones about it... my reasoning is not (most of the time) rational.

I just tend to firmly believe that all good things come in pairs.

I guess my vote would be modular if for no other reason that they're cool as shit and I can learn something from you in the process seeing as I have limited knowledge of them.

It would also give me GAS to put one together myself.

I don't think I'll be playing out much. None right away, down the road maybe a gig here and there. But I will still have to lug it to my bandmate's house from time to time for jamming and writing sessions.

Patching a modular is super fun, and the possibilities are endless for sure. But for playing structured melodic music with a keyboard it seems like a fixed architecture mono-synth (like a Phatty or the like) would probably cover 75% of the stuff you'd need. A Sequential Circuits Pro One could cover most of the stuff in that Michael Stigman Synthesizers.com video, for instance. To me it's more of a lifestyle choice than a music choice almost.

And for whatever it's worth, I tend to play my fixed architecture synths more than my modular. The grab it and go factor helps there I think. The module assortment in my modular is kinda weird too (no envelope generators yet, for instance) which doesn't help the modular.
