Oh, and I agree with a lot of what you said about guns Benhdy. I had my first rifle when I was 10. I know how to use them, I know how to shoot them, I know how to respect them. Bottom line is, I am buying another gun for the house soon. You just don't know....

exactly. they are a tool, maybe a tool that it's a little sad that our culture makes me feel like i need, but learn how to use them, and respect the responsibility to be knowledgeable and safe that owning them entails.
plus, they are FUN to shoot for target practice or skeet. i was really surprised how much i liked that. didn't shoot much from when i was 12 or so to 25.

I was brought up in pussy-ass liberal massachusetts, and I still was exposed to guns, learned how to handle them, and went both hunting and target shooting quite a few times growing up. Enough so that I went and got my Firearms ID when I was 16 and bought my own shotgun (which I sold during college because I was fucking poor and needed muneez. I don't own a gun now, and have no immediate plans to. But I do feel good knowing that I could go get one, and I know what I'm doing with it.
All that being said, I fucking hate the gross fetishizing that a lot of middle America does over guns.
Never shot a non-toy bow before, but learning could be fun.

I'll prolly end up picking up a 9mm sometime this summer. Less for protection, more for target shooting/practice/fun. I didn't grow up around guns till I moved back to America in 2001, and since then it's always been a fun thing for me.

lol. yeah, like an hobby, there's the extreme side that is scary and weird, but i bet people'd be a bit unnerved to listen to a Deep Geekery discussion of different fuzzes.
i'm with you. i grew up in the East Bay of Cali, damn near as liberal as it gets. all my friends thought it was weird to have guns around, but fuck that. my dad's been very involved with the NRA and i was only exposed to the good side of guns as a young'in. still weird if i float the idea of keeping a handgun at practice (our spot is in the HOOD) and it freaks out my band mates.
just a tool, and an interesting and fun hobby.
fuck yeah. a 1911 will be my next gun. love that pistol.
i'm gonna go with 45 though.

by My name is Mudd
I grew up in the mountains above Fresno in the Central Sierra Nevada range...we had about 5 acres or so at around 3500 ft. elevation, which meant that we had (among other things) rattlesnakes. Starting around this time of year, my friends and I would go out bow-hunting rattlers for shits and grins (and to hopefully thin out the population some, at least those we found closer to our house). Most of the time, either one of us or my dad would carry a 12 gauge as back-up, but it was my friends Mike and Brad and me with big wide deer-point arrows that did the real damage...6, 7, maybe 8 in a weekend sometimes.
What I don't understand, weapons- and society-wise, are all the tac-gear stores that seem to be everywhere - Visalia is just a bit over 120K population and we just had our 4th tac store open. One of the already-existing ones is near where I get my hair cut and, going off of appearances, I doubt I'd trust the people working there with a burnt-out match, much less something like a for-real gun.

I'd love to get a 45, but the initial cost and ammo cost are a bit steep for me.

i believe in private gun ownership, but it's not a wise choice for me because i have a bad temper and suicidal tendencies. also, i'm very nearsighted and as a result target shooting is right out.

^^^That poor fella has bosoms.
I'm cool with guns. I wouldn't mind owning a .45,...
It's a tough subject. Gun control sucks because it....
A) doesn't keep guns out of criminal's hands (think about it,...they are criminals,...do you think they give a fuck about breaking gun control laws?)
B) makes it harder for law abiding citizens to own and carry guns (a potential deterrent for crime would be criminals beginning to realize that more and more people are carrying)
Gun ownership comes with great responsibility,...unfortunately there are about 200 Million irresponsible people in America.
I never really looked at a gun and considered it to be effective personal or home protection. To much potential for collateral damage. If you stick a gun in someones face you better be willing to kill that person. I don't want to kill anyone. Harm? Sure,...if they are trying to harm me or my family.
The other thing about guns and personal protection,...if you expect a gun to be protection while you are in your home,...it pretty much needs to be loaded and by your side at all times. Now,...say you aren't home. Say you've lulled yourself into a false sense of security and just leave your gun unlocked and easily accessible. Say some unsavory finds out you own a gun (some people are flaunters). They track your movements and when the time is right,...break into your home and steal your weapon. Now that criminal has a black market firearm that will likely be sold to an even harder criminal that would use your firearm in the commission of a crime,...maybe even a murder. Congratulations,...your irresponsibility just got someone killed. You've contributed to a crime (it's akin to allowing your unfixed pit bull run around at large).
Of course this is a stars align type of scenario,...but I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility,...if not a par for the course scenario.
I've always looked at it as a fun hobby,...but I wouldn't have interest in it beyond that.
As far as the fearing the police,...yeah there are lots of crooked cops out there, and I'm as anti-authority as the next guy....but I don't freak out whenever I see a cop. That's just manifesting trouble IMO. Spokane has seen plenty of unnecessary force from the cops. But still,...while I don't trust them,....I don't have any reason to believe that they are going to force down my door and start shooting the place up.

Yeah,....Spokane is full of crazy unhinged people as well. I get nervous around them moreso than I do the cops.
Still ain't scared of the police cause I pretty much abide by the rules. Yeah they are a bunch of good ole boys,...but I know how to handle authority whenever I'm inconvenienced by it.
