I had one of them old Music Man amp thangs, 100 watts and it kept up fucking fine with a big loud rock band.

It was fuzzy. Oh so fuzzy. :omg: But seriously, plenty god damn loud. Same cab I hooked up to a 600W SS head...

...it just didn't cut it. Fucking god damn LIES of modern Class D amplification technology, why must you taunt me?

This is a tube vs tube question... Sorrrrrrry. But...

Has anyone compared a 70's Hiwatt DR201 to a 70's Ampeg SVT?

I have a friend who has both but lives quite far from me nowadays... He said the DR201 is comparable in loudness, is cleaner sounding and clearer sounding.

Really interested in a Dr201 right now.

I know this is a bass amp thread, but I use a GK MB200 head through a 2x12 with Emi Wizards for guitar and it puts it downnnnnnn. Super freakin' loud, simple, and clean. It's all I ask of an amplifier.

I'd get down with "cleaner and clearer" as far as descriptions go generally, but the 70's SVT is one of the sexiest sounding bass amplifiers in history. The HIWATT is not, so get your Last Crusade on and choose wisely.

I've played through 70's SVTs and while I think they were cool I never thought they were "that" much better then the 90's SVT CL I had for a long time which I recently traded for a second Mesa :idk: Personally I hate the sound of a dimed SVT it's like a one big fart.

Yeah I was told that Entwistle used 2 DR201's... Crazy.

Ideally, if the DR201 is good enough for the most talented bass player ever known to man, it's definitely worth a try.. Right? Haha.

Problem is... I have no idea what the DR201's are worth nowadays... From what I've read,
The EL34 version can go anywhere from $2k-$3k depending on condition, and the Kt88 as high as $3.5k if it was immaculate.

The one I'm looking at is a 1976 Reeves era DR201, EL34's, 4 input non overdrive model. It does have pre and master.

Apparently still in very good condition, haven't seen er' in a while.

There's always 3 or 4 70's SVT's for sale in my area at a time, ranging $1400-$1800.

Looking into getting rid of some stuff to fund either, I'm really leaning towards a DR201 more so because there's always 70's SVT's available around me for when I have some extra cash.

I hear the "wet blanket" complaint with SVTs a lot. Not that that has been my experience. FWIW I got my SVT-CL with a few minor issues for $700. So far I've replaced the "grill fasteners". Needs a new cooling fan and there is a rattle I will likely have a tech suss out for me. Beyond that I've been super stoked on it. Check out fliptops.net for parts should you decide on an SVT.

That's true. If you're going to hold on to it for a while I'd say go for the collector's piece.

I was also talking to a dude that's buddies with Jon Nunez from Torche that got some 70's SVT-ish sounds out of his 70's DR201 with 6550's.

I really don't know what to do though, I don't know if selling my Matamp is a good idea.
I just don't like the fact that with the mat I have to crank the master and the gain to get it loud, so I don't have an option to have clean bass really if I want it. I am leaning more towards having to use pedals to get fuzz/OD so I have both options.
That being said, the Mat sounds killer if you want that sound 100% of the time. I'm in a pickle.

If you only play with amps that have little preamp tubes, you can get some small boobs. I mean, that's cool and all... BUT IF YOU PLAY WITH BIG POWER AMP TUBES, YOU GET SOME BIG FUCKING BOOBS.
