So, I have a customer that has been touring with a fleet of old 1970's era Peavey Bass Series-400 heads. I just finish up some testing on one that I modified a bit. I found a way to increase the power from 150 Watts @ 4 Ohm, to 300 Watts RMS. It's quite ridiculous.

Nothing like modding Solid State amps. Old 70's Peavey amps have great discrete transistor preamps with Active EQ, on-board fuzz and distortion but their power amps don't have the power of a modern amp, do to some limits of those times. This is a power supply that I built for a 70's Peavey Bass Series 400 amp. The original power amp's output was 145 Watts RMS @ 4 Ohms. With the new power supply the power amp can now produce 300 Watts @ 4 Ohms. I really liked the amp when it was done and would put it up against any SLM made SVT. As for a vintage SVT, not sure. But I am building a second monster, this time with a set of hand selected matched transistors.

So I finally made the full transition to TUBE AMP ONLY by selling off my Genz Streamliner backup (never used it, didn't really love it).

Within a few weeks all three of my tube amps were in the shop. Thankfully I now have the Mesa 400 and 400+ back, better than ever.

Still waiting for the Trace V4 diagnosis. Fucking thing tried to kill me (bad shock), but it's still the best sounding amp I've ever plugged into.

Borrowed an old GK 400RB head during the interim, the old one with an iron transformer. Fucking HELL those amps RULE.

There's some great solid state amps out there, much like that one. I haven't used any Class D that gave me an erection though.

i'm still interested in tryin out a HOOGE TUBEY IMPREGNATOR rig sometime, but i switched from my QSC 1000'ish watt 2 channel amp to a Peavey IPR 1600 power amp. it's INSANE how light those buggers are. going from the 30 lb QSC to the 6 lb IPR is so good.

right now i'm lugging 4 12's, 2 boards, a keyboard &it's stand and my bass. plus the bag with a mini mixer abd cables galore. so even just making one piece of gear something i could carry with my dick helps a LOT.

Considering selling the 400+ since I like the 400 and V-Type better.

I came up with a list of specs:

2/4/8 ohm taps
50 very awkward pounds
a lot of loud freakin' watts
no more need for PA support
sexy black finish with rack ears
spinning knobs and sliding sliders
rubber feet for sitting and feeting
detachable power cord for cording
Stone Brewing Co. sticker, very nice!

And that actually makes me want to keep it. I mean, that sticker?

Ughhh want a 400 so bad. My amp is a loud 30W but it's just not 400W. + sliders. Love sliding sliders.

Man that looks good. I've always wanted a 400+. Still do, just not playing enough to justify one right now. Maybe someday.

It's definitely a sweet amp, but it's way too much wattage for me. I would need to power soak the hell out of it to get the sound I wanted (power tubes sweating like a fat fuck in a sauna) I'm more of a 100W dude. Although I've been thinking about a Peavey VB-2 lately (200W)

I've seen a guy express a very strong, unequivocal preference for the 400 over the 400+, so I'm not too surprised by that. Oh, and I gather the V-Type is notorious for breaking down (as well as awesome tone), so keep on good terms with your tech.
