Re: The Doom Room: ILF Edition
I'm with skip on this, I can never make some of the cooler things sound good with the way I play. I have learned over the years what i like (i'm actually the polar opposite and can't get into fenders... I like the feel of gibson type guitars more.) But i have seen some of my favorite bands play out of shit that most people wouldn't touch. One of my friends does a solo project/home recording thing (Video Below) and his gear is the weirdest mish mash of thrown together equipment that he has just dialed in over the years. He has a squier Telecaster that sounds perfect for him, plays out of a peavey vtm120 into a no name 4x12 and a fender 2x12 combo. His pedal board is such a gamish of like 30 dollar pedals that He gets some of the greatest sounds out of. It's all about finding something that works for you really.

Caparison are very good guitars. You can't go wrong there.
Droneforbreakfast wrote:My opinion on that sort of issue is make the best of what you have to work with.
Most people play through something and then they get new gear or switch gear and they expect it to sound the same, but it doesn't quite work that way at all. Some gear is better for a certain kind of sound, some gear is better for another kind of sound, that's just how the game is played.
A much better approach to it, in my humble opinion, is that you have to make the gear excel within what you do, you're the one who has to make it sound good and write music with it, because gear has an inherent sort of tone in your hands, of course, but the most important part is you using it for the correct application within your music. A strat may not sound good if you're expecting it to sound great in a song you wrote using an LP, but you can always write different stuff with it.
I could definitely play some fucked up drone shit with a strat, but i'd use it for an application which would sound great with it within that area. It's all about perspective.
Great points.

That's a rad pic!misterstomach wrote:question, probably for nick: last night i tried out a v4. it's been looked at by a competent tech. i actually got it from my tech's shop. he's done some work on it and is trying to help the owner sell it. he let me take it to practice to try it out. it was awesome. sounded really really good and was loud as shit. we played for an hourish, maybe a little less, then took a few minute break (i'm in a band with smokers). when we came back in and i walked up to the amp, i noticed that somewhat distinct smell of really hot electrical things. i played for a second. amp still sounded great, but when i put my hand on the faceplate, i noticed it was really hot, mostly over on the side with the power switches. seemed unusual, so i turned it off and switched to my jmp which i just got back from getting a retube and a couple of other odds and ends.
so what's up with that heat? seems like i shouldn't buy this one, right? that's not normal for a v4, right? what could it be? i guess it could be a lot of things, but it was weird and i stopped using it 'cause i really don't want to blow up an amp that's not mine.
Both of my Ampeg VT-40s(V2 in combo form) do this when I play them. It smells like hot eletrical things and they get warm as all hell but I've never had a problem with either. Freaked my out the first few times I cranked them though.ridingeternity wrote:NEW BAND ALERT: Bryan(vox) and Andy(guitar) from sludge lords THOU have started a new hardcore band...so fuckin' kvlt there aren't even recordings yet and they are booking their first tour.
This sounds awesome.
What's also awesome is the Iron Pile clip NIck put up in the Dunwich shark tank, can't wait for that thing to get to me house.
It looks like he's nom nom noming on the microphone.
Also, I just noticed your signature. You have a Wizard amp! That's amazing. Those things are pricey as fuck but really highly regarded.

Thanks for the input guys. Totally forgot that the dude from Neurosis was a strat man!
The guitar definitely works for some heavy stuff, I've been doing a black metal inspired thing in my spare writing time. Sometimes I just think that it's not dark enough though, it still has that snappy top end (even with the low tuning and buckers).

sweet. it was going to be at a venue called the northern, but i guess they just started getting noise complaints, so it's getting moved. venue is uncertain at this point but it's most likely the voyeur. not an ideal place, but my good friend who is setting up the show has a huge banging PA that he's going to bring 'cause their sound sucks and i think he's even planning on hanging huge black curtains to cover all the stupid shit on the walls. he's the man and he'll make it a good show so it should be pretty sweet. see you there.
Honestly, as someone who lived in that area for a couple years...you're waaaayyy better off at Le Voyeur than The Northern. The Northern is kinda a weird place. Lots of yuppie, brah type dudes and stuck up bitches. It's a shame, because it's a really fucking cool room. Le Voyeur is just plain awesome. Divey, colorful and the back room where the bands play is just so fucking gnarly looking and dark. I saw Bacchus play there once and a few others shows...always a good time.

That is an issue. Some guitars just aren't thick and ballsy like a Les Paul or an SG. A Strat, even with humbuckers, is tighter and airier. That's something you can't dial out. The bolt-on neck, maple fretboard, 25.5" scale, they all add to the percussive attack and brightness.

Dopesmoker 4/20 deals went up today, had to grab one of those tapes(still have a cassette player in my car) so worth it to be able to blast it at any given moment. Even though I have the trans green 2XLP already...still thinking about trying to convince the gf that she needs the Hasheeshan edition.

Yeah I traded into one for an insanely good deal in like 2007/8 when the market was WAY down and everyone was fire selling gear. Seriously, TGP was like a candy shop around then. I traded into it but wasn't using it so I let my friend use it in his projects and just got it back. It's an awesome amp, I'd say 30% Hiwatt and 70% Marshall. The hardest thing to get used to was how fast this amp responds, it's almost like I hear the note before I play them
