I got my Sunn 200S back from the shop [a cap blew up rather spectacularly]. Man that thing is godly, big, loud squishy attack! oh how I missed this amp!

Oh and what happened had nothing to do with the tubes... it still has the same tubes I put in it when I got it. It's the amp is 40+ years old and the caps went... dude also put in a diode or something to regulate the power input.

FancyMike wrote:So I just played my first two gigs with a tube bass setup and wow it was so great. Part of that may have been switching to a 2x15 as well. I used to use a MarkBass 210 combo, and the combo + a 410 with my louder band, but this week it was 2x15 with a Guild Thunderbass on top for one gig and a Twin Reverb for the other. It sounded so good, and I even still love my Rusty Box on the frontend of these. Seems a little weird at first to go from something so small and powerful down to the cheap, bulky rig putting out 10-20% of the power but the 15s are loud enough.

I would like a little more power though. Also to trade the Twin into a V4 somehow. Time to look for an affordable 200W solution. I'm not super interested in an SVT but it may be easier to find one of those or a 400+. Or maybe a second 100W and wire the cab for stereo though I don't really want to bi-amp. The Markbass should catch a decent price on craigslist, I've definitely sold quite a few things to talkbassy types locally over the last couple years.

Look for a used Traynor TBA200.
Really nice amp for the price and light weight due to Toroidal transformers.
I re-tubed mine with Winged C 6550s and some NOS Telefunken 12AX7s I had.
That turned it into a freaking great amp.
With a bit of fiddling around I got it to sound very close to my V4-B, more power and half the weight.

Twin reverb on bass? If you like the sound, get a PA-100 and another 2x15

My guitarist has actually been talking about selling his PA-100. Also there's a Peavey 2x15 on craigslist for $80, but man I'd rather not lug around 2 2x15s

200s are fucking epic on bass.

Still loving my Mesa 400, such a great amp. :yay:

Trace V4 took a dump and I haven't bothered to fix it yet.

Bought a Mesa 400+ recently, sooooo fuuuuuuuuuckinnnnggg loooooooouuuuuuuudddddddd but I think the 400 sounds slightly better.

And then I have a Genz Streamliner for gig backup. It sounds.... tube-ish I guess??? It has that big open low end, but man, nothing has that give and ULTIMATE POWER like a real tube thang.

I love some solid state amps like I love some active basses: great for some, no longer for me. I just don't get the kind of interactivity with my gear like I do with passive instruments and tube amps.

Partially psychological effect I'm sure, but hey, it makes me go :joy: so whatevz.

I just picked a solid state Traynor head today, man does this thing kill.
Angry, grindy, ugly.
Pretty much perfect for me.
Takes pedal better than any SS I've ever encountered.

With the 400+ and the Rics, you now pretty much have the exact bass rig from the first two Tool albums. And I do really fucking love that bass tone.

Yeah :thumb: I bet I could get really close if I used rounds.. or played REALLY hard.. I have to admit liking the bass playing on the early tool stuff better then the actual songs
