Just repeat the mantra.
"It's not pretentious, it's
math rock..."
"It's not pretentious, it's
math rock..."
"It's not pretentious, it's
math rock..."
But really, don't worry about it, mang.
I'm not pretentious, it's
post rock.
Yeah I try not to let it get me down and I write the stuff anyway because I believe in it.

I once had Special Delivery by Offspring stuck in my head for more than 2 months. I wasn't even aware that was possible until then. It was brutal.
Going strong on four months of the title melody from My Little Pony.
Maybe even more, I've lost count.
I dreamt someone sprinkled diarrhea on my bath towel. Lots of tiny brown specks on it.

I spent years trying to perfect music with odd time signatures. My favourite band I've ever had wrote many parts in various time signatures and tempos. It's incredibly stressful and hard work, hence why we never properly gigged with our tunes, but it was so exciting and rewarding when we did get it right. I just naturally wrote with odd timings and patterns. I rarely ever forced them out, and when I did they never worked. Most of the time I just played what I felt like and the rest of the band tried to play along. When they couldn't we would then realise that I was playing in 9/8 instead of 4/4, or 4/4 with the odd 7/8 or 3/4 thrown in for a bar or two. It was always a good laugh to find out that I can't play in time.

That's the key. If I think "I'm going to write a pretentious song in a fancy time signature" it doesn't work (same as with trying to write anything too specific for me), but sometimes I write something and then later figure out what time it's actually in and am surprised.

It's an awesome moment. You feel totally badass, while at the same time feel a bit... daft... for accidentally being awesome.

If anyone has that idea their song will probably (and rightfully) suck
