Who was the engineer that tracked you guys?
Howard Bilerman. Coolest dude ever. Supremely fulfilled his role as producer. I'm headed back up in Feb to mix with him.

Efrim's in the picture. He tracked a couple of tunes too.

i wouldn't even put glenn branca, rhys chatham, sonic youth et cetera in the same category as godspeed. period. i'm sorry. just talking out-loud.

Oh man, Bilerman is a great recording engineer. You're lucky that you're getting to work with him. Is there a possibility of getting some samples of what you did there, or will we just have to wait for the album?
Oh, and how was Efrim? I've heard mixed things about him.

True that. It's completely different fairytales. All very great fairytales - but also very different. Liek comparing a muff with rocket (or soimething.... i'm drunk), but anyways. Great stuff, but different leagues.

Nothing to show right now, but I can give ILF a taste of what we've done after we get some initial mixes figured. The album was very percussion based with a lot of tom rhythms and the space turned out to be an unbelievable asset to get a certain natural sound to the kit (

).
Efrim was way more reserved compared to Howard, though I didn't work enough with him to have a true opinion. He was happy to help with a transition we we're having trouble with, so that was his shining moment. All's I can say is that Howard's contribution was invaluable. Really have to credit him for pushing us to about the best we've ever played and being super helpful with some tougher arrangements. As well as just being a really cool personable guy.

/H2T endorsement

I will agree to disagree.. They are closer in similarity to godspeed than Mogwai or explosions in the sky will ever be in my opinion. I understand that they are very different. I just feel like they laid the ground work for a band like godspeed to come around a start a movement or genre or copy cats etc.

actually i have to agree in part becuz i saw on the Rhys Chatham wiki that godspeed did the
Guitar Trio thing but what i associate, identify & most admire about Rhys Chatham--noise (-rock), experimental boundary-pushing pieces, et cetera--is not what i associate w/ Godspeed. (full disclosure: i have not heard a full godspeed record.) i think even the moar heavier moments of Mogwai would have a closer similarity to Rhys Chatham. i'm not a big fan of Mogwai but i like their approach.
my biggest complaint w/ most post-rock is how it starts off real slow & crescendo-y & then it gets all loud & "emo." but i think that's becuz i'm moar used to post-hardcore and math-rock and stuff.

1.) Listen to 'Lift Yr Skinny Fists...", it's mostly ambient noisy stuff with a couple of post-rockish tracks thrown in.
2.) I def. agree with your complaint on the genre, but, if it's not that, then what is PR?

I love them all in there own ways. The best bands find a way to stay away from one genre. I try not to listen to to much Post-rock anymore these days just because I don't want any of it feeding into my song writing process what-so-ever. but I would recommend any of those bands we have been talking back and forth about. currently I have really been enjoying free jazz and this ambient guy that goes under the name The Caretaker (he has a bunch of free mp3s avail. at his website)

I recently bought the persistent repetition of phrases on vinyl and love it.

And I'd say Skinny Fists is def has more rock than ambient stuff--just in terms of a ratio.
And F#A#∞ is their best.

yeah i am listening to it now it's really good. i'm definitely attracted to the ambient & soundscape type stuff on here. teh post-rock "instrumentation"' is really toned down, to great efffect.
any of you guys into Emeralds.
