They're making the pedals and/or parts to spec for JHS to market and mark up, probably via agreements for X number of units in Y time frame. They're also surely collecting licensing fees for the pre-existing IP stuff they use (like Cusack's analog + tap tempo design, relay-based true bypass, etc) and probably flat fees up front for any bespoke engineering/design work, but that could be arranged any number of ways. They're why JHS rapidly went from a pile of poorly-made generic drive clones to more complex stuff like tap tempo delays and the multi-circuit drives with custom PCBs. He managed to sucker enough of the P&W crowd long enough to be able pay actual engineers to design and build them.
That's interesting. I've never owned anything by Cusack, Keeley or JHS and don't have much of an idea how large those companies really are. Do some people boycott Cusack and Keeley on the basis that they work with JHS? Are there medium sized pedal manufacturers that are considered to be more ethical in terms of the companies they work with, wages they pay employees, etc? It would be cool if there was something along the lines of workers' co-op or something.

I'm in the UK and my enthusiasm for pedals, etc, has exposed me to aspects of American culture that I was previously oblivious to. I remember using the Harmony Central forum and being surprised that so many young men there were married with children - it took me a while to make the connection that many of them were evangelical Christians.

I've seen some of the JHS guy's videos and wouldn't have suspected that he had extreme views. Perhaps I would be more suspicious if I was in the US. I sometimes watch Anderton's or That Pedal Show videos but I suspect that most of those people are 'shy Tories' and that does put me off somewhat!

I think if you refused to watch or buy anything from somebody who had voted Tory you would be uh, very short on options and pretty hungry soon I imagine. I think we need some room for being friends with people with whom we disagree, while accepting there's a line where that stops

That doesn't seem likely any longer in this day and age.

I, personally, will purchase nothing from someone who's not a Jacobite!

Lately? That has been how he's gotten away with so much shit for so long. Say anything critical of JHS on TGP, Facebook, Youtube, basically anywhere not here and the mob comes out to shut it down. Apparently, you just gotta tell people you're Jesus' personal pedal dude and they'll follow you into the gates of... well, take your pick. :idk:

Here and the circlejerk subreddit that exists almost entirely to bash Josh.

:idk: Yeah not to shit on anyones parade but this is why I don't post much anywhere else.

The amount of these guys make every forum into

After awhile when ever someone gets sick of it and even makes a pretty innocent joke..

Let alone saying something along the lines of name ONE thing that these people made better that they didn't break in the first place?

The reality about the gear industry is though is them has a very large controlling share that has been increasing by the same level of live music dieing out everywhere else.. those musicians get paid more/ get funding.. there is even a HUGE gear depot around here in OlyWa that is like a cosco for P&W venues... While I've watched the "normal" venues around the south puget sound dwindle even year... Sadly I don't have a fix.. other than ever other NW band STOP SOUNDING LIKE ALICE N CHAINS MEATS HEART!!!! I'm sure a lot of you have this problem even pre covid.. :idk:

I'm in Manchester so there's not many Tory voters about, less that 100 people in my ward at the last local election :thumb:

I only mentioned Anderton's/TPS to illustrate that I'm more likely to make assumptions about someone's political outlook if they're in the UK. I've no idea whether those assumptions are accurate though and would primarily avoid their videos because they're quite conservative in terms of their approach to music! :)

I think ethical consumerism can make a bit of an impact but it doesn't really influence my choices much. When it comes to pedals there's often multiple companies producing similar designs so it should usually be possible to avoid a company that has a particularly bad reputation. I suppose a lot of people use their pedalboard to express their personality so it might be particularly important to them.

Are there brands that evangelical Christians actively avoid? :)

:idk: my guess is if they have any doubts they can have Kenneth Copeland exercise their fuzzbox or something if they feel the devil got in it..

And who knows. Right at this very minute JHS could be colabing with Kenneth on a special run of refinished white boss metalzones that come pre-blessed :omg:

Hey me too. :joy:

I am definitely not anti-ethical consumerism to some degree - I do a bit of it when I know things? Just hard to be super great about it in every part of life, and particulary when you start making the criteria for avoiding businesses broader. Not that it's a bad thing to do by any means :idk: I do not have some big unified theory about this haha just thinking out loud as I go

Yes. It is very hard. As the world gets smaller and smaller and things are made for companies by other companies that might be done in ways you don't agree with from politics to human rights to pollution to you hate shell pink and baby blue ;) to where your electricity actually comes from.. and unless you live a very basic life where you have total control somehow... :idk: you just got to do what you feel is right within your own means I guess..

"The nasty fuzz you know, in an equally aggressive enclosure.
The year is a guess (and was required for the listing) but the knobs on this pedal appear to corroborate the more recent models.
I was told this was a one off pedal made by Devi Ever, and was sold to a friend of hers, who sold it to the person that gave it to me in a trade. Since I can’t sell a story, and it’s not in pristine cosmetic shape, I’ve priced it accordingly."

:wha?:

I think I have some subconscious bias towards “shimmery” or “fancy” boutique shit that I lump in with the P&W crowd.

Anyway I got a vasectomy. And I’m Canadian.
