I'd LOVE to try a >6 string guitar, but I'm not sure I need one. Low tuned 6s (baritone and drop C) suit my heavy things needs, but I'm very curious what they're like to play. Most of them look baaaad though.

You would be "being yourself" if you tried one.
I have short scales too. I've had them for years so playing any of them is second nature to me (although if you saw me play you might be like, "Buddy... that's not second nature!" )

Oh okay. My mistake... go be yourself! They're loads of fun! But guitars of all sorts are just intrinsically cool.
Right now... my two main axes are 1. A short-scale acoustic I got from an Ex-GF (NAME, I'm eternally grateful. Hope wherever you are and whatever you are doing, you are happy and healthy). I put a $15 gold foil pickup in there and it just brings me so much joy! 2. Another short scale electric with a speaker in in (that does not work) I got for $30 with my beloved Grandfather. I got it thinking I didn't need to test it $30 is whatever. The speaker didn't work but it adds to the sound. I can it my budget resonator

A couple things to note, and maybe an unsolicited idea or two.
1. RE: Agile. I like them! I even have a six string bass from the same makers under a different brand (relax world, it was all of $200 and I got a free case with it )
2. My 9 String has passive pickups. At the time that was important to me. I personally wouldn't care one way or the other now depending on the price.
3. RE B.o.S. Wants a 9-String -> Re-Open your B.o.S. Builds Thread.. and "make" a 9-String?
4. Bad idea but I have flirted with the idea of re purposing a craigslist find 6 string into another 9 or even 10 string
5. RE: Agile -> Be patient, set up filters. I saw a 10 string go for $500 on Reverb. You can find sales too on their site. Labor Day is coming up. You can score a brand new one for like $800 (that... is a lot of money to me... so I don't say that casually... but in the context of extended range instruments... it really is a fraction of the price... and around the price of used Fender Jaguar or Jazzmaster [even less than that... that's kind of how I rationalized getting my 9 String... 5 years ago).

Both Copilot, Lastgasp Art Laboratories and Rainger himself make white noise pedals that are more functional and, perhaps more importantly, better sounding, if that's your jam.

The Lastgasp one recently sold for a significantly reduced amount. I "considered" it. Two white noise pedals (that DO do different things) and all my synths (all have white or pink noise sources) seems like I'm covered though. I also have a radio

RMA Crustacean is excellent as a noise source/gen and a distortion processor (depending on your options).

The LAL is an awesome beast that, in the right context, can be used like some sort of "filter". It can really mellow or cut some unwanted freqs. Also free envelope snare rattle haha.

Ok, I know you beckoned me on pg 1 abt samplers or whatever, but posting Ceephax will get me in here for a hot second.

My wife and I jam on Ceephax all the time. We've been moving into a house and he has been our personal DJ. One of the few guys I buy whatever release he puts out (that I can find on wax).

Trying to justify picking up a copy of "Exidy Tours" which has become my favorite of his next to his Rephlex releases.

We spin United Acid Emirates and Camelot Arcade often in House Psyre.

Really dig his little brother remixes on Squarepusher's releases too.

I actually hope they did keep Korg’s voltage. That’s the same voltage that LZX’s video synth stuff runs, so, it’ll be easier to integrate with those systems if they did that. I doubt they’ll have any kind of sequencer on it, essentially for the same reason the Model-D (added expense for a synth that can’t be played on its own and is designed to be played via something else).

Taken from another thread but I’m A/B’ing it with your “irrational” (very rational in my mind) gear goals. Have you considered the MS-20 module from KORG? I know it won’t be battery operated. Maybe Behringer will but out just a desktop unit too.

Korg’s module version of the MS-20 is definitely full size, it still uses 1/4 jacks. So, I really hope the Behringer clone is both eurorack sized and uses Korg’s wacky voltage.

A bit of a side note, but I really want to fuck around with the MyVolts Ripchord and see what I can power with it. If I could get the MyVolts to power the MS-20 clone, vidiot, and the T-Rex Replicator Jr, then I’d be really close to my battery-powered setup (assuming it all still fits in a check-in bag).


p.s. I feel like it’s only irrational because of the size/audio quality restrictions. If I used some roland boutiques, a zt lunchbox jr, a couple of volcas, an ipad running some video synth stuff, and some random battery effects I could easily get something that’s very portable, small, and battery powered. But I want to thread that needle with ANALOG, TUBE, and TAPE gear thrown in the mix. And that combo is weirdly hard to manage. I probably need to reevaluate how portable I need to be. A set up can be very portable, even though you can’t play it literally anywhere.

This thread is not about me anymore. I was going to get a Yamaha SU700 and a Roland S-330 (with a bunch of floppies and 8 channel bus). But, Doommeow posted refurbished Behringer Model D's selling for under $200. Still getting the Roland S-330 at some point this week. So my gear budget is blown for the rest of the year and Q1 + Q2 of next year (I have said this before blah blah blah ).

Help 01010111 find his dream gear!!!. Also, post cool knives?

I want a 100% battery powered rig that can fit in a TSA approved size backpack. The rig would have:

an analog voltage-controlled polysynth
analog monosynth
an fm synth
an analog drum machine
a videosynth
a sampler
a tape delay
a spring reverb
individual fuzz effects for each instrument listed above
a four-pedal pedalboard
a crt tv
an amp with a built-in mixer that’s loud enough to play with a drummer
weighs less than 40lbs

If I can have all that with good interfaces for everything, I doubt I’d ever buy another piece of gear. It’d be like overheated water: any change would destroy it’s current state.

I'll do a little sampler chat. After 2 years of solid work setting up an s900 and s2000, upgrading them RAM wise and floppy>usb etc, I sold them. I sold them along with all my older 19" roland effects and lower end compressors. I'm finally at a point where I'm fortunate enough to have my dream set up. I still feel that an s900 could have had a place but there was just disapointment after disapointment happening with my akai's. My collaborator used the s2000 after I realized it couldn't load s900 disks when they are imaged to work with the Gotek/HXC drives. We kept having mind boggling (user error) issues. Also sold my OP-1.

Currently my only sampling capable devices are machinedrum sps-1 mkii uw+ and a kp3+ loaded with breaks and The Deer Hunter samples ("have you ever pissed and taken a drink of beer at the same time").

I needed to take a long break from the buy and sell hustle I've been running for the past 10 years and stick with exactly what I own now for the next 3-5 years.

That's about all I have to say about all of that.

But really I should just sell all my shit and get a music-geared laptop.

But then doing it live is also cool, I just think "human at desk" is pretty boring (even when it's good).
