Aw, it feels like you're deriding me...
Yes, the Buzz/Meat Box and Corrosion DO go for absurd prices that I wouldn't recommend paying (I have the meat+buzz box schems from DOD anyway, and the Corrosion schem. is available online)... Shawn of Sirkut has said he may build some PCB's for the Buzz Box (and maybe Meat Box), too... but, of course, no one knows when that'll be... Some day, though, haha.
Anywho, pedals like the DM and Grunge are still pretty easy to find on the cheap (anywhere from 20-50 dollars seems normal)... The Metal Maniac and Thrash Master *used* to be this way, and still are reasonably-priced, but now they tend to go for 45-50 bucks (and occasionally for way more when some asshole on ebay thinks anyone will buy one for $100+)... They used to go for dirt cheap, like 20-30 bucks on ebay, though... It's not hard to find them for less if you are patient, though, I suppose.
------------------------------
Speaking from personal experience, the Metal Maniac seems to work best on its own... Good for shaker boxes and noisy guitar distortion... They self-oscillate with hardly any gain, so whenever you're not playing, it's all "EEEEEEEEEEEE!"
And as for the DOD Wah/Vol. pedal, I have seen some folks use them and heard a few people say they were good... Not to mention, they are pretty compact which appeals to me, but I never came across one for little money when I was actually *looking*... I don't use "manual" wah effects that much because the only wah pedal I own is a piece of garbage that seems to have fried itself... I want to eventually replace the inductor (which I believe is the problem with it) and just rehouse it in a box with a knob so I can adjust it with my hand...
I was also thinking about turning the chasis into an exp. pedal for the Boss PS-5, and having an input jack on the wah box to control it that way if I feel like it.
EDIT: I should add, you can get something similar to the Meat Box with any Subharmonic Generator and some bitchin' speakers! I think the Peavey Kosmos rack is probably 100-200 dollar (and the cheapest you will find), but for what you'd pay, you'd get more features than the Meat Box delivers in a
rackmount unit...
Which reminds me, I need to put "patch bay" on my want list.
