There is a mod you can do to the Small Clone to put the depth control on a pot instead of on that 2 position switch. This at least gives you a full range of depth control. I did a little run-through of a clone I bought from a guy with this mod. Super useful in my opinion.

Maybe it's flanger? As used by The Cure etc.

Most of the Choruses on the M9 are very "Modulationy", not very transparent.
It's kind of the opposite sort of texture to the Small Clone almost...

Yeah, I'm not very happy with any of the choruses in the M9. Analog set to vibrato mode and tri-chorus are the closest to usable IMHO.
The Tri-Chorus is beautiful. But, it's not the Chorus sound I'm looking for. There's only one standard chorus sound on the M9. And not even a Chorus like Flanger like the Mistress. Silly.

I know the precise sound you're looking for. Your M9 won't get it but your right, you need an old Boss CE-1 or 2.

BOSS CE-2, Staple of many 90s bands, fluid/metallic sound i'd call the opposite of the Small Clone, the CE-1 was notoriously lousy for guitars and adaptions to make it function lead to sounds that don't meet expectations to most people.
Of note though... both the BOSS and (Modern 90 Onwards) Small Clone use the same chip, MN3007, it's the LFO wave and surrounding filtering that make the difference, new and old small clones will be fairly if not identically simmilar in sound (except the nano which was noteably badly made and set up by many reviewers)

Shit, I passed up a Boss CE-2 not so long ago.
I wanted one for ages a while back. I decided to pass it up because I thought with the amount of Chorus pedals around these days, there must be something that's pretty much the same but with more features.
Is there?

I like the chorus pedals that have a great vibrato-like sound.

Jam Pedals Waterfall
Retro Sonic Chorus/Vibrato
Even the Diamond Vibrato works fantastically as a chorus pedal. It doesn't sound 'lush' like you'd expect, but I don't like that liquid sound particularly very much. It's nice for certain applications, but not all the time.
