5-10 years ago was the peak of dozens of tiny builders entering the marketplace every week with a TS, Rat, and SHO for $300 each and a 6 month waitlist. IMO technological advances have dramatically lowered the barrier to entry for designing digital effects and that has let to much more inventive pedals coming to market.

Depends on where you were looking, I guess, but I think you're probably right. I was mostly thinking that the GB24 is, what, at least 7 years old now and I think that was much more interesting as an effect at the time. Probably because it was more in contrast to the rest of the field, whixh has since turned into the "I've just discovered that people like digital artifacts" explosion we've seen from builders ever since... which is just as boring (arguably more boring

) as a new TS or a Rat.

Im thinking of it in terms of mainstream builders with dealers and capacity to produce enough product to meet demand putting out pedals that make unique sounds and combine lots of different processing elements. If there are some very small number of GB24s in the world, I have a hard time considering that a beacon of innovation that discounts a company like Red Panda pumping a thousand Tensors onto the market in their first batch a couple years down the road and you can actually try one in a store.

Yeah that's fair, obviously it's all experience. I paid like $100 for the GB24 to basically try on a lark, which is roughly one quarter of the price I'd be paying for a Tensor tomorrow (given VAT and exchange rate). For what it's worth the only pedal I'm even considering in the near future is a 45000 and that's hardly inexpensive and certainly not a revolutionary new effect.

I'll build anyone a tubescreamer for 1000 dollars. It's going to have a three year wait list because it's ugly as fuck and I'm lazy.

The pedal I was talking about if we aren't clear is the 1981 Inventions rat or whatever the hell it is. It's a 3 knob rat clone that obviously has been tweaked but costs like 300 new. Insane IMO. A fuck ton of people have bought them too which means either A) I don't get it and am not hip or in tune (that's highly possible) or B) there's a lot of dumb asses out there (which is also highly possible). I admire that the guy has been making bank on that though! I don't fucking get it but more power to him! I'd pay 100 bucks top end for any rat. lol.

I mean...doesn’t it come with a really nice bag/case? That alone is worth $100.
For real though, totally agree w you. It’s just proof that the right marketing can demand a premium for anything.

Bitcrushing and sample degradation aren't necessarily pitch, gain, or filter based, but you can get incidental results from them that do all 3. They are pretty similar to each other too, kind of like distortion vs. fuzz. I'm still in love with the ISD Sampler, one of my favorite modules.

I've started building my own partly because of the cost of a lot of the interesting pedals, and partly because I fancied trying building my own.
This has led me to find that there are a number of very odd pedals out there that are very unlikely to come up for sale, but I can have something very similar if I build it.
Having said that, there are still some of the new world of programmed pedals that are among my absolute favourites (Ghost Fax. System Error etc.) so I'm sure I will still buy one or two if funds allow.

I know right? Plus its shipped in that neto bag instead of a box. So it's super secure and shit.
God damn you hipster pedal builders! STOP! JUST STOP!
I wish someone would do a 1 to 1 clone of the Boss DS 1. Why is this not a thing?
