Regarding the Dark Star...it's an impedance thing. I'm not a technical dude so I can't explain it but if you don't have it last in the chain the pedal succeeding it will act as a buffer. I've been putting this $90 Harmonic Exciter clone (and have it off) after the Dark Star and it seems to eliminate the noise.

I tried it everywhere - first, last, with and without buffered pedals before and after, different power supplies... clearly I liked the pedal enough to try and make it work. Nothing I did made the hiss go away, so - sadly - I had to let it go. I know Skully returned his for the same reason...

Interesting. I have the V1...you both had V2? I'm sure there is a little hiss in mine but it NOTHING compared to having it last in the chain.

Yeah, I've heard there are some hiss issues with some of their other pedals. I'm really interested in this pedal but hesitant for that reason. Hopefully some one who has one can chime in.

i’m not going to be any help here since my core “sound” is technically all hiss based....

Are you talking Dark Star or excess here?
I just picked up a Dark Star. This thread has me a little worried. I use a Boss ES-5 for all my pedal and amp switching so we’ll see if I notice it. Wonder how much the mix effects that and whether the trim pot has anything to do with the noise.

I've read the Dark Star and the Haunt have hiss issues here and on other forums. No personal experience though. I'm interested to hear if the Excess does.

Yeah ILF in general is way more tolerant of hiss from pedals than I am

. You could always just plug it in by itself and see if it hisses

.

Masturbatory demo aside, it sounds good. Like Only Theatre of Pain in a box. I think I'd feel be a bit more excited about it if I knew how to play a guitar, though. And, as far as noise is concerned, I have enough "standard" modulation, dirt and delay effects, with or without the little quirky combinations or bells and whistles. It's difficult for me to get really excited about something that doesn't scramble up input sources like so many chicks in a culling hopper these days. I've become really desensitized.

so i found some time to fiddle with this today, just a quickie, no recording involved.
1. i’m not getting any (unwanted) noise from the unit, i even put it on the same power chain with the oscillator i was using (and that usually causes bleed over)
2. i am a tad disappointed in the distortion section, the mod section can get much louder, which i feel is weird enough, but anything lower than noon on the distortion tone cuts even more volume. so not really much of a distortion unit, in case you were buying it for that... that being said i LOVE a lot of the sounds i’m getting from it.

I got a darkstar and don't have any hiss. also ended up getting a reflector for super cheap and no hiss on that either. not much time to dick with those peds though.

I have a Dark Star V2 built 12/20/17 written inside in sharpie by OBNE. It has zero hiss.
