Going for a retro sound is risky but it can work if done skillfully.

Titus Andronicus are pretty unabashedly trying to copy The Replacements' tin-can production, but Kevin McMahon is so boss that it totally works.

Cave In - Until Your Hearts Stops
Poison The Well - Tear From The Red
Excellent records, but I've a really hard time with the production.

Also, anything and everything Porcupine Tree. I just cannot listen to them cause they sound too polished and artificial too me.

Black Flag's post-damaged output has some pretty dreadful production. I think the worst offender is In My Head though, because the vocals were drowned in the mix because of Greg Ginn's pettiness rather than any sort of technical or artistic purpose.

EVERYTHING FLYING LOTUS AND CLARK.
Those guys do not like dynamic range and everything is slammed into a brickwall.
Shame to ruin such pretty sonic arrangements with that loudness wars bullshit.

Loveless has some neat songs, but the production makes me want to throw up. it sounds so late 80s, early 90s.

The really dated production is what turns me off from most "classic" shoegaze bands honestly.

I've never listened to them, not one, but I think The Loudness War have one of the best band names I've ever heard.

As for the phenomenon, the worst "loudness war" record I've ever heard is Grammatik's #digitalfreedom.

Even with iTunes Equalizer on it's still just obnoxiously pushed. I can't put the songs in playlists if I'd planned on setting it and forgetting it because they're twice as loud as anything else in my library.

I was actually trying to explain this to my chinese co-worker the other day while flailing my arms around frantically and totally ran our rental chevy cruze off the road.

Hahaha!

I don't get it. Gavin whatshisface is a rad drummer, but all you can hear is the top skin on everything, with like an exponentially small decay. Pretty sure his skins are made of wet cardboard too. Then they are all tuned so that there is no discernible difference between his smallest tom and the floor tom. His kick drum may or may not be a floor tom laying on its side as well.

Albini generally annoys the shit out of me, but I'd like him to produce a porcupine tree album just to see if there is a good band lurking under the flaccid lettuce production.
