I use this more than my Tubescreamer. Very similar, but this just has a bit more growl.

Cheap as shit too.

Also, this:

This thing is disgusting.

Lab ratchet, the gate and push knobs can offer some interesting tones.

Mellowtone wizard fountain is a whole bunch of fun....Jero makes them if you ask nicely.

Oh yeah, I'm also really really curious about the Wizard Fountain, it seems pretty cool!
Lab Ratchet is great too but it's more fuzz than overdrive or distortion I'd say.

The older Ibanez TK-999us is a really good unsung pedal, it's a tubeworks tubedriver variation. It's bright but good tube dist/OD and swapping the 12ax7 for a 12au7 makes it better at low gain, I run the gain super low and use the volume as a bit of boost too.

Found my for $70 on CL.

B.K. Butler Mini Matrix is righteous, runs off two 12ax7 tubes.

Good call on the tube king!

Somewhat in the same cathegory of 'old, affordable, often overlooked and not too hip', another tube od/dist with a pretty unique character that I can't help but call "amp like":

H&K Tube factor. For all I know it's still being made, I'm not sure. I just know that I owned one ages ago, and I wish I kept it. It's more than just a ts808 type blues drive, though it obviously won't do brutal high gain. Gritty and warm at the same time, and extremely dynamic and natural sounding. If that makes any sense at all, I suck at describing pedlol toanz

Ebay sold has them for $39 to 60 average recently, there's one up now for 109 "or best offer" which means it'll go a lot less given completeds.
Is this thing useable on bass? Because in that range I could totally use a weird distortion rack thing

Useable on anything. There's no clean blend if you're one of them, but you can set one channel to clean or cleanish and FS between them. Parametric EQ (dual on Ch1) helps a ton.

It's a good point on Trombetta--cool sounding fuzzes that don't get a lot of attention. I wish I knew more about them, but do I gather right that they tend to be more custom than a fixed set of consistently made models? That tends to obscure what a builder is up to for folks who aren't in the loop.
No, there are fixed models, but they can be customized / combined in many ways. I would bet many people go with some customization, if only because they've had about a year to think about it. There's a little information on his site. http://www.paultrombettadesign.com/pedals.html

I have a Mini-Bone that's almost stock :-)
(mine has a a germanium / silicon switch added.)

I will probably get a custom finish on my Tornita, just because.

I got my Mini-Bone used, for borderline immediate gratification, fwiw.

The good news about the Trombetta wait list is that you can cancel if you change your mind, and you don't have to commit to a specific model or pay anything until a couple weeks before delivery.

I fall into this category. :hello:

If a Trombetta popped up and I had money, I'd buy it. :idk:
