Re: WTF is "worship" music?
I am going to apologize in advance if this offends anyone. frankly I believe anyone has right to believe in whom/what ever they want in what ever way suits them and the world for the best…that being said, I love this quote from Burroughs:
"If you’re doing business with a religious son of a bitch, get it in writing. His word isn’t worth shit, not with the good Lord telling him how to fuck you on the deal."

Truth. The electric church as Jimi called it.

I dunno but I reckon a thread like this could easily have got into a shit fight on another forum. Well played ILF.
There's a reason I haven't posted here. And that is it.
So,

Also, Noah from this band really likes JC.

Church would make sense to me if it was just that.

I think there's a truth in that statement.
Funny story, me and my cousin who are both unreligious went over to the UK to visit a rapper whom we made an album with, he was religious and in one of these modern churches with a small electric band.
We stayed with him and his wife for a few days and on Sunday they planned to go to church, since we didn't have anything to do we decided to go along.
When they all started singing together it was pretty awesome actually, I got goosebumps and immediately acknowledged the fact that this was the same feeling and same force that drives me when I'm on stage.
Oh yeah, agreed on the heart shaped ass thing by the way!

I recall reading in Frank Zappa's autobio that when his wife was headed into the hospital to deliver Dweezil, they wouldn't be admitted without filling out a form that included the field "Religion." Frank wasn't sure what to write, so he just put down "Musician."
I always dug that.
One of my favorite bands from ye olde college days were Cordelia's Dad, who did scruffed-up noisy electric (well, and acoustic, depending on the set) covers of old New England and Appalachian folk songs, most of which were pretty straight-up religious. It was pretty cool, because Tim, the singer, was an ethnomusicologist, so he could always tell cool stories about what the songs were about. I remember one in particular had been a really popular drinking song that the church adapted to fit its needs.

1st rule of marketing, man. If a campaign works, do it again. And again. And again. Until people get sick of it. Then you do it again.
Actually, listening to Tim ramble about songs and their origin stories is always fascinating. I remember one tune in particular, the words didn't really make linear sense - they were about a guy killing his brother for chopping down his hazelnut tree. Then Tim explained that the tree thing was a stand-in for incest.
Interestingly, I have no problem howling along with their songs about god, and heaven, and all sorts of religious stuff, but when I went to take voice lessons, I just couldn't get with learning hymns as vocal exercises.

I think the traditional heart shape was originally intended to be two human hearts put together. Now isn't that sweet?
Interesting thread, I've never been to a church except for a few funerals and a baptism, so I don't know much about what you guys got going on in there. It's cool that you have pedals and modern music and shit, that might change the archaic image of the church.

There are mega churches around here where you have to disclose your earnings information before you're allowed in the flock. They're serious about the whole pass around the collection plate business.

Yeah its that whole business part of the business that I can't gel with.
Everyone is most certainly entitled to their own spirituality, certainly, but don't be thinking you can sell it.

That's some exclusionary garbage. I can't really jive with the mega church concept. The area between running a business and running a church with hundreds of employees is a real sketchy spot.

Hey! Let's talk about serious thing. We're gonna talk about guitar, dude.

I've put "Heavy Metal" on census forms before.
Communal singing releases endorphins in our brains, I'm sure the effect is similar at football matches, Maiden concerts and church. Although it takes on different meanings for the participants.

I tell you what, back in the 90s when I was in high school I worked on commission as a salesman at an indie musical instrument shop and churches were my biggest clients. There would be little old ladies who put it in their wills to give all their money to "enchance" the church choir or whatever...that lead to a LOT of huge mega systems and healthy commissions. I still recall how amazing the acoustics were in most of these churches, and what a great joy it was to hook them up with everything. That led me to seek out churches to record in when I began making records, for their natural acoustics. Good times.
