Damn! I never though of that before! I really don't like Gaga's music, but some part of me likes how fucking weird she gets for being as popular as she is :idk:

I don't see any "new Cobains, Manson, Coopers...etc." But I've fallen out of the mainstream pretty hard. I don't know ANY of the artists people talk about, and I try to forget the shitty contemporary "pop" music that gets played at work as soon as I leave the building. I agree that if you're like me and grew up in the 90s, then of course it seems like everything was innovative at the time. I do still like some RATM, Tool, NIN, and I still think that Antichrist Superstar is badass. There are some things going on in that album that I don't think I've heard anywhere else yet.

Anyway, I think that there's a bell curve to everything. I've said this in other threads. There's some reallt bad SHIT at one end, some amazing musicianship and innovation at the other end, and a lot BLEH in the middle. Of course, the BLEH takes up the most of the bell, so that's what you hear when you check out whatever's popular these days.

I'll stick with what speaks to me and the artists that have kept on doing it over the last 15 years or so (The Dillinger fucking Escape Plan, The Mars Volta and ORL's stuff, most things created by Aaron Turner and company).
And that's my 2 cents.

every era has a small handful of awesome bands and artists and a HUGE river of raw sewage that get mass media blow jobs like Pat Boon, The Monkeys, The Eagles, Motley Crue, The Spice Girls, and Kanye west… but the thing is with out the useless raw sewage artists the cool bands would not seem as cool...

yeah but the Monkees were about more than just music. They were about rebellion! And political and social upheaval!

I saw Sublime a few weeks before Brad died. Good show. That's really the only contribution I have here.

Where's the new Black Metal kids burning churches and murdering each other? I think that's what we really want to know. Gaga wearing a funny hat is not competing with that shit.

I was born in 73, grew up with the tail end of the 70's music, which was awful, put up with 80's music which was largely awful, although the underground stuff from then kicked ass, got excited in the early 90's when music started to be music again, and then got really pissed when it was co-opted by the business side and all the underground stuff from the 80's I had liked died. honestly, now is the best time for music since the 60's. the lack of profit incentive means that music can be true to itself and artists can do what they want. Yeah, the pop machine is still cranking crap out but once you get clued into what exists beyond that, there is a ton of amazing music being made.

as far as i'm concerned, now is 100% the best time for music
more good shit is being created every day and all the good shit of the past still exists
easier to access, cheaper to make

good times
