Guitar sanded down with medium, fine, and extra fine paper. Went over with 600 grit before applying the first rub of poly last night.
Light sanding with 600 grit again this morning, followed by the second layer of poly!

Thanks buddy! This poly business isn't as difficult as I was expecting, actually the same process that I used with tru oil- just using a cut up tee shirt as a rag to wipe the poly in.
Not quite sure how many layers I'm going to do. I'm going to put on the 3rd either today or tomorrow and see how that feels before putting on a 4th.

3 coats of poly on now. Think I might stop, or just let it get bone dry for a few days.

There are 4 coats of poly on the guitar now, the last one will have been applied 72 hours ago this evening. Tonight I'm going to take 00 wool over the guitar, and then do 2-3 coats of Paste Wax over the next 2-3 days.

The last of the hardware should be landing today.

So really I'm just waiting for the pickguard and the neck!

Damn. Late but I was going to suggest the fralin firebird puts. Sounds great. Fuller tele sound without losing any brightness to it at all. I'm still looking for a body just to use them.

I contemplated Firebird pickups briefly in my head! Cool thing about the neck is that it is routed for a humbucker if I change my mind.

So I bought Paste Wax during my lunch break, but I think I'm going to exchange it for automotive wax. I don't want the shine, I want the protection, plus I have a feeling the automotive wax has a higher temperature threshold than the indoor for melting purposes. I dont want to leave my guitar in my car one day and come back to a guitar covered in something like donut frosting

After I bought my Jaguar Bass from a dude in Florida (during the summer), this is what I was greeted by after opening the box. Gross.

THANK YOU for that confirmation haha. Maybe I'll just skip the wax all together....

That was my thought after you made the donut reference.

Yeah, returned the wax this morning.
Last night I tried to go to bed when my wife did (9:00pm on the dot, remember she's pregnant) but couldn't fall asleep that early.
So I got out of bed and tried cutting out a pickguard out of curiosity to see if I coudl make a half way decent one before the record comes in, ended up with a little tiny pickguard that essentially covered the humbucker route and flowed into the control plate. Not gonna use it, but it was fun to try.
I did get all of the shielding put into the guitar last night though, so that's done. Didn't get a chance to stop by the post office to pick up the hardware that landed yesterday, but today I will be picking it up. Gonna install the ferrules tonight as well as the strap holders

a cut and polish creme is the way to go instead of wax. I've managed to get mirror finishes with wet sanding up to 3000 grit, then using polishing drill attachements from harbor freight and finising with maguires cut and polish cream. No residue, it would actually remove wax.

I kinda want to do as matte of a finish as I can on the guitar though. Really, if I could have a rock hard matte finish, that would be perfect to me!

gotcha, I'd still do the wetsanding up to 3000 and just skip the polishing then. So stoked to see it finished! Will be rad when the neck gets here and you can get that on.
