An Ian MacKaye interview is always worth my attention. Thanks for the post. Although his thing about the lack of sustain in baritones, I think that's a Danelectro issue...I've owned many baritones, some with insane amounts of sustain.
It was an interesting interview, but I think MacKaye is a little misguided about the connection between music and alcohol.

There are already places where you can wear whatever, and drink pbr or something, and all I want is a place like that but on the other end where I can do what I want. There are a million places for you, but there isn't anywhere for me - and that sucks. I like dressing well because I think it looks better, and because I'm most comfortable in those kinds of clothes. And, when I'm in places where that is the norm, people are much more respectful. It's rare that I go to a metal show where people don't slam into me at least once or twice, and spill their drinks on me a half a dozen times. A lot of times by the end of the show I'm just aggravated. As for what I said about it being quiet during sets or whatever, when I'm at places that don't have a good sound system (almost everywhere in Boston/Cambridge) and everyone is shouting, it really interferes with hearing the band sometimes.
Dress up for the Whores show and I'll buy you something top shelf.
I get what you and goroth are saying about codified behaviors regardless, but I think a lot of it is part and parcel with the kind of music that we listen to. You know? You're essentially complaining about going to a reggae show and being offended by pot smoke.

I thought not. Way to toy with my emotions, though.

Well, unless things have changed drastically, I was wondering if they even have anything top shelf at O'Brien's.
