There's also the coil blend option on a bucker.
I absolutely love it on my Classic Player Jaguar HH, it makes the thing work for about anything.

I was joking . It's easy to derail a topic for me when mentioning Charlie Christians.

You talking about actual coil blending within the same pickup or coil splitting?

Ah, good one, I was thinking: "Woop woop, that's the sound of the police."
Monsieur Furtkamp I'm also curious about the thing you mentioned.

More or less. Talking about tone is pretty imprecise, but just kind of what color of guitar are you looking for? Woody? Bright? Crisp? Sharp? etc...
Tristan wrote:If you say Neil Young I think about P90's but they can be quite noisy, especially with fuzz.
Maybe Filtertrons but they can be a bit on the bright side I think.
It's not that easy to find something unique and versatile that works well with fuzz.
Yeah, I think really bright when I think of Neil Young, crazy horse…I think a high output tele single coil could get you into in a similar space. I am not positive, but I think most of his sound is from a P90 LP goldtop, into a pile of wildly overdriven fender tweed amps, right? He's kind of a minimalist with effects, no?
Tristan wrote:Not to derail the topic but I'm having a Lollar Charlie Christian and a TV Jones Classic Plus installed in my Gibson ES335, I'm curious to hear what that's going to do.
Please post a report. I have been looking at those Charlie Christians to put into a Jazzcaster build I'd like to do.
sylnau wrote:univalve wrote:Neil Youngish experimental post rock i would say.
I only like "Le Noise"
I would say more Tom Waits "Real Gone"
When I think of the mental picture I have of both Neil Young and Tom Waits, I don't think big beefy humbucker sounds. I think pretty bright, articulate…P90, Single Coil and Hollowbodys come to mind.
I'm definitely no Waits expert, but I think of him as either playing a beat to shit martin that he slams with mic-pres [a ton of his sound is based on the fact that he records soft sounds at high volumes.] I also think he may play an old Gretsch hollow body acoustic, or an old Guild hollowbody with single coils…
Maybe see if you can find a cheap vintage hollowbody and throwing a pickup in it? A friend of mine found a crappy 50's/60's arch top…may have been a Silvertone acoustic with F-holes, and he had a dog ear P90 mounted on it. Whole thing ran him $200 with a nice pickup, and it sounds great, and very much in the zone you are talking about. You may have to fight the feedback.
Another route I could also see looking for some kind of super cheap guitar that has pickups that are borderline microphonic. Think Silvertone or Tiesco.
Maybe look at the gold foil pickups that Lollar makes? They are under his Misc. Single Coils on his site. If you are looking to hold onto your guitar, maybe look at those P-rails seymour duncan makes? Coil splitting, so p90 and a regular single coil or both at once as a unique humbucker.

That's why I went to the Telecaster...
But I feel like it lack the 3D feels I had with the PRS.

Might be a good idea to just go on a research mission to a store and just play a bunch of guitars? I kind of think you may just not be connected with this one, which is a disappointing place to be. That sucks man...

Wow, cool!
I don't know whether she's done by March but if so I'll definitely bring her!
One warning though, she's a lefty…

Ouffffffffff.... gggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....
Something is wrong with my amp.
When I switch it from standby to on or on to standby... I hear some noise.
And now I feel a volume drop.
I guess it's the power tubes.
Or maybe the rectifier (5Y3) it has a strange fume in it.
I'll have to bring it to a tech.
What would you put in there (something available at regular store)?
TAD? JJ? Tung-Sol?
V1: Input tube both channels a and b, 12ax7
V2: 2nd stage for Channel b and Reverb Return, 12ax7
V3: 3rd stage for Channel a and b, 12ax7
V4: FX Loop, Send and Return, 12ax7
V5: Phase Inverter, 12ax7
V6: Power Tube, 6V6
V7: Power Tube, 6V6
V8: Rectifier, 5Y3

For 12ax7s I really like the Tung Sol RIs, for power tubes I generally always go with JJs. JJ rectifier tubes have gotten a bad rap for burning out early but I've never had any issues with them at all.

Would that be a good idea?
V1: Input tube both channels a and b, 12ax7 = TUNG-SOL 12AX7
V2: 2nd stage for Channel b and Reverb Return, 12ax7 = JJ ECC83S
V3: 3rd stage for Channel a and b, 12ax7 = JJ ECC83S
V4: FX Loop, Send and Return, 12ax7 = JJ ECC83S
V5: Phase Inverter, 12ax7 = TUNG-SOL 12AX7
V6: Power Tube, 6V6 = JJ 6v6S or TAD 6V6GT
V7: Power Tube, 6V6 = JJ 6V6S or TAD 6v6GT
V8: Rectifier, 5Y3 = JJ 5Y3S
I want to keep the Tweed sag tone.
How to know if only the rectifier needs to be changed?
