M9 or Vox DelayLab
I don't understand why DL4s still have value over $80 or so.

People ask for around 170-200EUR for used DL4s around here. It sucks.
I'd love to get what OddKnowledge describes there, but am afraid of DL4's sound (and build) quality. Is it as bad as people say? Bad enough to worry about in bass/noise/drone/dirty ambient -context? What about the DelayLab? I've read a few reviews that said it's ok, but not better than DL4. They were written from a delay perspective though, and I'm interested in it only as a looper.
I haven't even seen an M9, but it looks a huge in the pictures and costs around 400EUR. Is it worth it or would it be better to just spend some more and get a Boomerang in that price range? Not that I'm gonna have money for one in a long while.
I'm interested in DittoX2, but would love to get the stomping options of the DL4.

Man, i don't think the DL4 'sounds' bad at all. To me it manages to sit well in the mix, stacks loops without getting too muddy, and is easy to time loops when stomping. You have to consider that it has been around for nearly 15 years now
170-200 EUR is silly though, the used market is Australia is almost that bad too.
As far as the build quality goes, absolutely replace the footswitches as soon as possible and you'll be fine. The enclosure is practically indestructible, but surface-mounted switches?? Really??

Finally, a correct (read: for me) sized pedal from this series.

That's actually my problem with the TCE loopers. Having a click on a looper totally throws me off.

I really don't like the click either. I want to swap my ditto with a soft switch.
That's really the only thing I don't like about it though.
I'm still super excited for this X2

Get that ugly ass piece off my board!!! Baaaahhhh!
Man, I love the DL-4 for looping as well, still the one to beat and hard to believe that someone hasn't released a dedicated looper just like it but smaller for under $200 in all these years. The only thing that's even come close is the Timeline. It's pricey but the delays are killer (mostly) and the looper is basically an expanded and improved upon DL-4 in terms of features and functionality. They left off the "one-shot" feature tho, probably the most unique thing on the DL-4, achieve all those Minus The Bear and Tera Melos loop hiccup tricks.

This new Ditto looks cool tho, I'll probably get one.

And yeah, as others have mentioned, so many companies need to make the jump to soft touch switching already. Get with it geez!

It's not smaller but *cough *Vox DelayLab* cough. You can find them used for under $200 and if you don't use the delays, voilĂ , it's a dedicated looper. It doesn't do half speed though and I wish it had more time. :(

I think part of the problem is that musicians are trained to believe that you *must* have a click to have true bypass, and some musicians believe that TRUE BYPASS is the only way to rig, gig, and jig.

Back the previous point, Line 6 really dropped the ball with their dedicated looper. It seems like Vox and TCE have been the only companies to ask "Why are musicians of all kinds still paying $250 for DL4s?" They both got damn close with improvements in some areas. But, hell, I'd have a DL4 if they didn't still go for so much in relation to how long they loop.

I'd also say a used RC-20XL is a damn fine replacement, although it too doesn't do straight up half speed.

These are the questions that keep me up at night, such as "Why doesn't Dunlop/MXR release a Carbon Copy with mod/depth knobs on the outside?"

Meh. M9 is overkill. I didn't like the sounds, and the looper is marginally better. Price wasn't justified for me.
