Is there a mechanical reason the tailpieces are so long on those trems, or is it just that way so it isn't ugly like a Strat trem?

I just got one of these:

Never owned a guitar in any color other than something "neutral" (besides sunburst). This one is great... you can see the wood grain through the blue.

However, I would say that a Fender Strat in sonic blue with a white pickguard is gross.
