I'm seriously considering following in your footsteps on this with the basket case bass I just picked up. My 8 string kramer is awesome but is admitedly dificult to play. I get down with it but nobody else has been able to jel with it. I'm thinking your setup would be much easier to play and would still have that sound I love.

It's really neat dude! You can still bring the heavies quite simply on the lower strings, and then on the higher strings you can get all technical and complicated haha

That schaller bridge looks awesome and like it would work very well, are the grooves not cut on it when you recieve it?
Not a bad price for it either. If I go that route with my build it will up the cost of the build and make me less likely to sell it which was my origional intent. Still thinking about it.

Nah no grooves which is nice but also a pain if you dont have tools haha. Used your method of using the excess string to make the grooves but I'd still like to get some files to do it right. Also I think the bridge sits up about 1/8-1/4" too high off of the bass (like its made to fit in a route) but I really didn't feel like routing it out. I put a decent shim in the neck that took care of most of the high action

So I fucked up the brass nut and it's not sitting correctly. I'm pretty sure it's the way that I sanded it down. It wasn't really an issue until the bass sat for a while, but I think I'm going to buy another nut and file it down the right way for height. The brass nut that is on it now didn't have any sort of radius to it, and when I sanded it I tried to make the radius, which seemed to work for the most part. But I checked on it the other day (hadn't played the bass in almost a month) and the nut had come loose/wouldn't sit flush to the neck. So that'll be my next project sometime soon!

Thanks Chankz! I really enjoy playing it, such a different full sound to it. I'm hoping I can get an already thinned out brass nut for it so I don't have to hand-sand the nut down anymore, cause that was a pain. But tracking bass with this guy rules!

You'll want to make the bottom of the nut as flat as possible and do the same to where it sits in the wood. If it goes to low just make a shim and glue that in place first.

Yeah my problem was the nut was WAY too tall and I didn't sand it on a flat surface. I gotta get a new one, or try to fix this one. I also gotta try to get the dried superglue out of the nut slot :(

oh man... If I had files I would totally be all over them. It's kind of sad I used the extra clippings off the bass strings to make the grooves in the bridge saddles :(
