Queens has always been the Josh Homme show, and this record feels like a mid-life crisis. I can relate...it's fucking with my head. The lyrics are fantastic.
Keep Your Eyes Peeled, My God is the Sun, and I Appear Missing are standouts. Hard to imagine if/how they'll incorporate the more meloncholy songs into their live show.
Your interpretation seems right on. I just read an article about the record where Josh describes it as an audio representation of his last year which he noted was manic and with some truly miserable moments peppered in

If QOTSA still sounded like they did on Rated R and Songs For The Deaf, then every one would be bitching about how they never progressed. Now that they've sounded different for, you know, TEN FUCKING YEARS, their fans are still "wah, I miss nick." Fans are the absolute worst.

I like Unsane. And Motorhead. And a whole bunch of other bands that didn't progress.
New jams just aren't as tasty as the old jams. Like going to Grape when you've been hooked on that S'trawb'rry. QED.

Yeah, I agree with everyone that the earlier albums were better, but lullabies was good, and what I've heard of the new record so far is good. I prefer that they changed even if I maybe don't love the change because it's more interesting.

I don't mind that they changed I just don't like the way that they did it.

The NPR show was awesome. The new album has really grown on me, and the songs sound great live. This may not be the "good old QOTSA" but the current version is fucking fantastic.
