This song:Vanessa Carlton's A Thousand Miles::Me:Every Girl.
Dood. This is so great!
Her voice reminds me of "Guyville" era Liz Phair, but her phrasing and the song structure remind me a lot of Sunny Day Real Estate. I will be listening to this a lot more!
:edit:
I listened to this album a bunch today and it's just so good. Honestly the first "rock" band that's excited me in a long time. It's so honest and vulnerable.
DUUUUUUDE YES! They're my friends from way back, and whenever they come to town they stay at my place. best fucking band.

Shit, this one gets me every time too.
Plus there is this one. I know you guys won't understand the lyrics. But it is awesome. It is the closing song to a concept album about breaking up. This is the one that is the optimist vision of the next relationship. He keeps naming places where he was and what he did there. And the refrain goes: This is where you can find me when you're looking for me, just in case you can't see I've been sitting right beside you for a while. I fucking love this song.

Re: Songs that make you all emotional n shit
ths is a real love/hate story about me and a song
Finns of my age all know this. This is what my childhood in the 70's sounded like, because, well - a Finnish singer Taiska recorded her version and it made a top 10 hit in Finland. Eveybody lwas listening to it. And You can still hear it today in the radio every second day. The original was composed by Fabio Frizzi, better known for his work with Italian gore and suspense movies.
Yeah, Fulci and sick shit like that. And 70's soft core erotica, like the Amore LIbero from when I was born, 1974.
Here's more info, in case anybody is for some strange reason interested
Overtly sentimental, yeah, but without actual lyrics it's bearable. Sure. Why not.

But here's Taiska butchering it with her Finnish lyrics. I'm going to need some sedatives now.

...and I love to hate it. As I said. Or I hate myself when I can't get it out of my head and get sentimental and lost in memories. I actually used to always leave the room, when and where ever it was playing.
So I guess, secretly, I love it.
And then in 2002 my old friends did a metal remake of it for a Finnish road movie that was a big hit. I felt as if they had betrayed me and made a personal insult. Knew it wasn't, couldn't help the feeling.
Hearing of it made me actually tell them things I'm pretty sure they never were able to forgive me, about whoring for big recored companies.

And the hit also turned out to be a too heavy burden for guys when they realised the cover song made them a one hit wonder. Their own music was dark gothic metal and they couldn't put up with being lovely boys playing that lovely song. They gigged every little hole in FInland, played two gigs a day, worked mad for a year and a half, refusing to play that song if the until they had to book their own gigs again. They made good money for it though, so, well, You know. Not a bad thing. And got the feet in to the rotten kitchen of the Finish music biz. Not a bad thing either, if You can take it like a ho'.
blah blah.
who gives a shit anyway
fuck this song fucks me up so bad

The verse lyrics absolutely kill me and the solo really strikes the nail in the coffin. Simple solo, but one of the most emotional I've ever heard. But that's just my opinion.

Re: Songs that make you all emotional n shit
Become What You Are [as The Juliana Hatfield Three] Juliana Hatfield
The Champ. She does it all: writes, sings, plays guitar, bass & piano, produces, chooses or photographs her own artwork, and now runs her own label. What really sets her apart is her amazing prolific quality songwriting. In the 2000s alone, she released 5 solo albums, a retrospective collection that included 7 new songs, a Juliana's Pony album, a Blake Babies album + EP, 2 Some Girls albums, a collaboration with the band Frank Smith, and over 50 songs on her website that she considered "extras" which any other musician would kill for. On top of that, she found the time to write & publish her memoirs! But her brilliance relies not upon sheer numbers. For nearly two decades she has carved out her own path without succumbing to commercial pressures to make her more "mainstream-friendly." Always defying expectations, she makes the music she wants to make, shrugging off pigeonholing critics who cannot understand a desire to explore the music spectrum. This trait was demonstrated most conspicuously in 2000 when she released two polar opposite albums, the softer, melodically sumptuous Beautiful Creature and the snarling, wickedly rocking Total System Failure, on the same day. There simply is no other music artist quite like Juliana. In 2010 she decided to retire, but that lasted just one year, returning with an electric band album in 2011 and a covers album in 2012. Proving my point about The Amazing Juliana, you simply can't put a cork on a volcano.
