'75 USA Reissue.
The second pic is before I ditched the "ashtray" and slapped on a Badass Bridge.

very pretty jazz. I've always wanted to put an ashtray on mine, they make it look so classy.

I bought this from my friend for 20 dollars... I completely destroyed the neck (by stepping on it while it was laid on my matress... dumbass self) so I glued it back together and then ended up trashing it again at a noise show... (It ended up in about 5 different pieces and a friend snagged the fretboard, so it's unrepairable...) As a result, I had to put this REALLY crappy neck from a really bad hand-me-down Synsonics "Terminator" guitar. (Very cool for bending... It has a built-in amplifier and when you touch the circuit board it makes all kinds of squelching and grumbly noises!) The neck sucks though... and it never stays in tune.

That's really cool. What all goes into a refinish like that? It looks like half collage, half artwork painted right on the guitar?

the process involved burning, grey and yellow spray paint, sanding, steel wool, newspaper, a bible, various other paint.

i burnt some of the original burst finish off.....sanded....added: yellow and gray spray paint....sanded some more...then decided to completely take the guitar apart (because...at that point it just had the strings and tailpiece removed only).

once the guitar was apart i used steel wool and created a very smooth surface. i took newspaper articles/pics about katrina (i keep a lot of things like that for diff art i do...) and gluestick'd the paper onto the top of the guitar. i did the same thing with a bible. i then just did various swashes of yellow, orange, white and red.....steel wool again.....repeated the color swash....then took a very small paintbrush and added lots of detail (in black) to separate the colors.

on the back of the headstock, i just took newsprint and pasted it...for the serial number i used the ransom note style. i didn't want to see the serial number but i didn't want to just remove it. that seemed like a good way to do both. i didn't sand off the back of the headstock...i just added the art. the headstock has overspray...i know that...i just didn't really want to sand it off and redo it. in the long run..i figured...the kid is really hard on guitars so it's going to be beat to shit anyway (if it gets used, that is).

the back of the guitar has had some of the finish burnt off...the neck was left alone...well except for some light steel wool. but no burning or refinishing.

once everything was "art'ed up", i sprayed a very light nitro finish over the top, sides, and back of guitar...and the back of the headstock. steel wool and repeated the process.

i put really old seymour duncan 59 wraps...and a small brass plate that reads: soldier of fortune.

Yeah, it's really unique.

Is the thickness of the materials applied an issue when it comes time to seal it? I'm guessing all the steel wool rubs keeps the layers smooth and thin.

The part between the knobs and the bridge almost looks like a cityscape, or a bunch of candles burning. Also, all the little details in black are really cool because they don't immediately pop out, it fits everything together well.

Oh, and I much prefer this to relc'ing that simply sands away the finish on a brand new guitar and stains the plastic. Because all the relics look the same then. You can tell that this guitar has a story.

If only I had the skills and a Rondo LP or Strat to work with.
