when i was playing in the acoustic improvisational ensemble i used to use drone tunings with no 3rd a lot. one that i favored was DGDGGD for playing in G; i also used my altered Stills tuning in D and C (DADADD/CGCGCC). another weird variation i sometimes use is open G with the top string left normal, DGDGBE; this gives you the open-tuned low strings with normal tuning and patterns preserved on the top strings.

I just busted the 1st string and came up with something that sounds really cool for big fuzz chords.
Low to high it is:
B#FCFF
Dunno what the 1st string would be if it was still intact. It sounds great the way it is right now. crazy pedal note solos on the the high F strings and a low thump with the B# for all kinds of riffs. lots of easy power chords too.

B#? you mean C, dude? CFCFF makes sense.

Depending on the key he was playing in, B# is a perfectly valid note from a music theory perspective.

Maybe the tuner is off, but it's not C. Maybe it was A on the lowest note. I was using garageband's tuner, maybe that has something to do with it?

AADGBE is the 'bomb' tuning....

Technically it's the 'Boris' tuning.

That's a toss up - it was also Floor's tuning in 1992....now Torche....
i'm sure someone used it before either of them too.

I was pretty sure that the Torche tuning was *bomb string*AADGB. There's a video somewhere where he talks about it.

Floor's tuning is/was:
bomb string, A, A, E, B, E (low to high, obviously).

Changed strings to my short scale bass and tried to go to as low as A - G - C - F - A - C but no, not working. Should have guessed. That's lower than a regular 34" down tuned five string bass, and tuned to drop C it's already in that territory

My cheap-ass Gretsch bass vi stays in drop C tuning just fine but the low C with 30" (29.75" to be exact) short scale though the low end barely differs from a bomb string. Would probably need better pups. And more string tension.
So, probably keeping the same old drop C (C-A-D-G-H-E) for now.

You too will be an old fart in no time at all, OR You decide to totally disregard aging and concentrate on present tense.

Bassus, may I suggest C-A-G-E-D-D (That's "CAGED" with an extra "D" at the end)? It's a little more poetic sounding.
