Hiya C

This is only muff I´ve known. I got it in about 1989 and I still love it. The only mods Ive done are a true bypass switching and add a led. Im not interested in changing the sound of it. If I want something with more mids I use another pedal.

It happened the same during the 80´s. When the Russian muff came out. It was poor people choices and everyone agreed is was second rate compare tho any of the American made ones...
now it a totally different story.

Internet create this monster thing. because the sound of the pedal are the same, so it must the our hearing that has changed during times.

btw: I still don't like the sound of the Russian muffs..

Cheers

hype makes the world go 'round... one man's garbage is another man's treasure... i say these things to my wife every time i buy a new piece of kit.... and i lean on this way of thinking when i need to sell that shit later....

we are an odd beast, us devourers of tone, us rapists of fuzz.... okay, someone has been watching too much Game of Thrones lately....

Thanks for the Pedal Porn BTW, that IC muff is HAWT

Hey dude... oh, I was recommending Made By Mike to someone else up there... I think it was Officer Bukowski.

Anyway... yep, my first pedal was a Russian Big Muff, a green Sovtek, and I bought it for $50 new. I sold it on eBay for $60, so I was like YAY A PROFIT. This was in like 2000. I wasn't a fan of it either... in retrospect, it sounded alright, but just not what I wanted. Then you get endorsements from the Black Keys or whomever and they become these Pseudo-Grails. And that's fine... I just wish people could recognize good sound when they hear it. I've always loved what is now known as the IC Muff sound, just didn't know where to find it. I'd tried a lot of different Muffs, but it was only recently that I started to understand the different builds and transistors and versions and everything. I'm just glad I got my 1978 V5 off of eBay just now, and that will be good enough. I run it through my Loopmaster, so that takes care of the true bypass issue.

But I suppose that's why we have all these great boutique pedals too... Fuzzhugger, Dr. Scientist, EQD, Mellowtone, Devi... you get people that know what they want to hear, and know what they want to create, and we are the ones who benefit. It doesn't take a whole lot of like Artist Endorsement or anything... just fuzz love.

You are totally correct Stanimal.
Times were different back then. I played with the same 3 pedal for years because I had no money and i even didnt know other pedlas existed...
Now we have too much money and spend very little time trying to squeeze sounds from our machines...

You know, it's funny. I've played more than a few Big Muffs over the last 15 years, and I always thought they were close to what I wanted to hear, but not quite. I love the creamy sustain, but I always just wanted it to be a little trashier, a little more distortion-y. The Musket, which I'm running now, can sort of get there by playing with the mids and focus knobs. But the clips I've heard of the IC Muff are much closer to that sound. So I've got an order into MadeByMike now for one. And I'm proud to say that it has jack shit to do with Billy. But I also do find it funny that the IC Muffs have exploded so much recently. The reason I never tried to get ahold of one is that everyone said they were absolute crap until just a year or two ago.

Yeah, isn't that like the boner of the century? It ain't no thang, really, but yeah, I plugged my V5 in when it arrived the other day and was immediately like YES. YES. And yeah, I have a Triangle clone that is pretty hot... just not quite there. Same with the Russians and newer NYCs. I hope you dig your Made By Mike... let us know what you think of it when it arrives!

I am also proud to say that my love of it has jack shit to do with Corgan.

Can't wait until Keith Richards reveals that he used a DOD Supra Distortion for "Satisfaction".

I must also say here that I love Devi's pedals, and she certainly is a forerunner of the boutique market, but a $350 clone doesn't thrill me. I know it's got some neat shit in it... but seriously, what would you do with this pedal?

for a big muff, superfuzz and an active mixer/eq it is priced very reasonably

if it is a quality build, though.

It's my design, built to INFANEM standards, and I'll probably be building the whole production batch myself. ;)

It's when a component is designed for X-ray machines and some asshole puts it in a pedal.

We make components for X-ray machines, glad to know that they are boutique!
