You know, I can get behind a lot of bass-oriented stuff, but if there's one thing I hate it's slap bass. And that song has far too much of it.

On top of the fact that I find Victor Wooten to be one of the most uninspiring, wanky, overrated bassists of all time. He's only slightly better (in my mind) than Jaco.

I agree that Victor can be wanky especially with the shit he does with bella fleck and the flecktones. However what he says about music and what he teaches about music puts him over the top for me at least. I have learned a lot about music from reading some of his works.

But you can't talk smack about Stanley Clarke because he is the fucking man.

El Ten Eleven. Not sure if they were mentioned or if they fit what you're looking for. Just drums and bass, tho he does throw in a small guitar part on a few songs.

Can't stand jaco or wooten. I played in jazz bands for years with douche bag high schoolers who learned every riff they ever played. They couldn't swing to save their lives but they could slap REALLY FAST.

Agreed, the more I thought about it a lot of bass players are out just to reproduce the motions and have no grasp on the music that they are trying to bring across. Same could be said about Les Claypool and Flea ... who has yet to make a decent record.

:erm: Ok, I know Flea is sorta known for the 'whakkity-whakkity' stuff..
but let's not forget he has been providing some really unique/cool bass-lines in RHCP for, what...20 years? :idk:

I guess my love for RHCP dropped after Freaky Stylie. While I appreciate his bass work I would rather put glass in my ears then listen to anything newer released.

The virtuoso player has always been kind of a crazy paradox to me.

On the one hand, having the Jaco/Wooten/Berlin/Mingus/Coltrane/Parker/etc. mastery of any instrument, to such a degree that the only constraint is your mind and imagination is super commendable.

On the other, I've always kind of dug the contentious relationship many other artists have with their musical attack. Michael Gira, Thurston Moore, and Eugene Robinson comes to mind first in that department.

For me, at least, intent always outweighs ability.

Best encapsulation of the central friction in modern music ever.

Yep, :thumb: nail on the head. Intent backing up content.

other than that:  Nothing wrong with playing extreme metal and dropping in a sly slap bass lead in there, just to drop the unsuspecting audience's jaw and then kick in the teeth of the doubting Thomas in the front row. Blast beats and distorted slap leads, why not? A bluesy break and a wacky slap fill to kick the brootz back in, why the hell not?

I like slap bass. Nearly as much as I like a distorted guitar. Both have their uses, like screwdrivers and hammers. But not always, because, sometimes people try to work through songs with bad use of fine tools. Meaning: they are just techniques and sounds, and there's nothing to hate in fuzz guitar either, just because a bunch of cunts play fuzz guitar, right? So quit hating, haters. :erm:

Jonas Hellborg kicks ass when it's about whackity-whakity. You don't have to agree, but in that case You are proven wrong! Don't know if I would have ever ventured into basses only projects if it wasn't for him.

What won my heart, already in early 90's, was when he steps on his dirt box and shreds through riffs and licks, instead of pleasing the modern jazz slap bass aficionados. And plays the synth chords for backing shit up with his bass MIDI out. Clearly, guy could just whoppity-whoppity-slap-slappity-fap-fap through the songs like a cunt and make wannabes drool. But he does so much more, playing less.

...the song actually starts at 1:39.

Hellborg's got some crazy Indian-influenced metal-y albums that strike my fancy every one in a while.

Overall, though, he generally does what I find tiring in a lot of music--too much going on. Give me one to one-and-a-half of a motif at a half beat off and I'm a happy man.

That's a valid point there, yeah, the same with Primus. In fact I think that's exactly what usually puts down people with most of slap/tap/thumb etc bass stuff, if it's not the goofy tacky jazz sounds. When I don't feel like hearing all (or at least half) of the notes of the chords being played, or I don't feel like bopping my head to a joke, I'll switch to Om. :thumb:

Yeah, Om has been mentioned a few times already.

But perhaps it is already time for us to get BACK TO THE TOPIC, keep 'em coming :thumb: Bands with bass guitars doing all the job. Or at least doing all the guitars job.

does Animals as Leaders count? :erm:

I personally don't really care for them much, but they're a trio with two 8-string guitars and a drummer...so...:idk:

ummm... I don't know :idk: but really, if the tuning of those goes low enough they'd count.

Ba-dum-BUM <crash!>

Sorry, that was my one bad prog-rock joke. Carry on.
