The the empty is awesome enough to put Le Tigre in my favourite band list eventhough half their albums aren't that worthwhile.
Xiu Xiu. Brilliant pick.
I totally disagree about Le Tigre, though. I have a sticker on my car.

It tends to change from week to week, but here's this week's list in no particular order with one of my favorite songs from each:
Flower Travellin' Band - Slowly But Surely - Some of the most inventive use of whammy bar I've ever heard. Hideki's playing changed my approach to guitar.
Daikaiju - Jellyfish Sunrise - One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Dub/Surf/Psychedelia/Prog/Rock/Amazing. Best/hardest working instrumental band on the planet.
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Red Right Hand - The first song that I heard from them, and it still remains my favorite. Still hard to believe the lyrics are mostly ad-libbed.
Boris - Feedbacker - Cheating maybe, but the whole album is one song.
King Crimson - The ConstruKtion of Light - I can't get enough of this song/piece. Adrian Belew's voice soaring over polyphony of guitars and warr-guitar.
Scott Walker - It's Raining Today - Oddly enough, the perfect rainy day song. Dissonant strings, incredible vocal performance. Melancholia at its best.
Scott Walker - Clara - I had to choose him twice, because his older material is a completely different animal from his newer. Clara is from his 2006 release, The Drift, and remains one of the most haunting songs (if you can even call it a song) I've ever heard. Images of the dead Mussolini and Clara Barton are burned into my memory because of this song.
That should be enough blathering for now

i feel like i should have clarified in my original post that isaac brock from modest mouse is my absolute, hands down main influence on guitar. i don't care if he just uses octave chords and thirds and fancy variations of the power chord non-stop, there's just something extremely soothing about knowing that i don't have to be technically proficient or technically "good" to make music that gains a reaction. it kind of sucks, because modest mouse has a very destinct sound, so any time i play something i write i always get "that's really good" but it's inevitably followed up by "it sounds like modest mouse." i'm influenced by thurston and lee a great deal as well, but mostly because of their use of noise stuff. i tried for years to make my own alternate tunings, but i could never make them work - or i would write like a 3/4 chord riff that sounded great and then get stuck. i used to be best friends with a guy who did some amazing stuff and only played in alternate tunings. i currently own his old jag stang and the thing always tunes sharp and refuses to stay in tune. kind of sucks and i need to get it fixed haha.

i like old mgmt! <3 hot love drama and money to burn. even their old straight pop stuff had a kinda psychedelic flair to it...
have you heard the band that was originally called the management? lol... they are actually really good too, i was kinda surprised.

Rock/Alt/Awesomeness = Blind Melon - 2X4 but anything really! Their S/T was killer and little more poppy, but they really opened up on Soup. Holy shit their guitar players are incredible. They were also right on the money with their town using Analog Man, Matchless, etc. already in the early 90s. They also opened up for Neil Young...freakin' sweet.
Musical Madness = Frank Zappa - What Is The Ugliest Part of Your Body? The Mother's stuff is fantastic and this man was easily one of the most talented if not most talented musicians of the 20th century. Whether or not his talent can be easily appreciated is still debatable though. haha
Blues = Bukka White - When Can I Change My Clothes?
Psych = The 13th Floor Elevators - Fire Engine
The Black Angels - Telephone or anything off of Passover and Phosphene Dream
Garage = The White Stripes - When I Hear My Name
The Shadows of Knight - Gloria
Alt-Country = Lucero - everything!!!!
Cory Branan - Prettiest Waitress in Memphis
Folk = Willy Mason - Oxygen and Hard Hand to Hold
