Yeah I've considered going down the fender road, but they're just as expensive here. Fucking blows man.

That sucks. The thing I always liked about Fender is that you could pick up a MIM that would be top quality, and a working order workhorse for fuck all cash. The way Fender seem to me is that they start with a great instrument at low price points and then build on it, making them more awesome the more you want to spend.

Gibson make truly great instruments at £1500+, but then strip quality and features so 90% of the lower price points are poor guitars.

I think it's moreso that their QC is piss-awful, so a $400 Epi can play better off the shelf than a $4,000 gibson.

You guys in OZ are screwed on guitar prices. Used SGs are the way to go. Of all my guitars, the SG is the easiest and fastest to play. It is so flexible with tuning, and it's a fucking tank. I've had little kids rocking out and dropping it, and aside from the dings, it's rock solid.

Yeah dudes, it sucks. The Japanese market has a real good stranglehold down here because they can turn out a quality product thats very playable for much less. But by the time they get into a shop they're still way over priced. Its less of a gamble ordering one for a third retail price off the web as the money you save you can sink into upgrades, and you usually get a pretty sweet neck.

:thumb: I love SGs! Black Sabbath + Circle Jerks + Frank Zappa = you just can't go wrong

I have a friend who buys guitars in from Japan and sells them locally (for Aussies). Usually he does it to make a little profit, but I could try and hook you up if you want? I'm not sure he'd want that, but he's a grown man.

He's the owner of a small pedal company called Toyroom FX. Look him up. His name is Tim.

I gotta say, Iommic: I fucking LOVE SG's - the problems i have with this one are problems that can be avoided.

or fixed... tuning and action are a easy fix.

Iommic Pope wrote:Vidret and Wood Wizard, you guys have both put me off the idea of an sg entirely now. So now I'm confused. And yeah, Wood Wizard, thats why I generally prefer neck throughs. Also, I really liked the concept of that new Gibson midtown, but fuck that shit they're making fretboards out of these days. That killed it for me. That and the price. That guitar retails for near $3k in my town and just looking at it...its just not finished to that standard. Also I've had good experience with the gotoh tuners, but I've only used Schaller stop tails before. They make good stuff either way.

Actually, I was pining for a neck through sg and the only thing I could find was an incredibly obscure lawsuit era knock off that was made in Japan and marketed to Canada. I think the name on the headstock was Mann (?) BUT the manufacturer was still ishibashi.

mate...dont be off SG so quickly...i'm sure Wood Wizard and Vidret know what they are talking about, and are talking on experience and knowledge which i may/may not have...and also, i might be in my honeymoon period with my new SG...but i couldn't be happier with the SG I got. I might also be lucky, because in the last few years i have tried a lot of Gibsons Les Pauls, and did not find anything that i would pay money for...however this SG has really changed my view of Gibsons.

Agreed, Im not saying dont buy one im saying make sure you play it and know that youre making the right choice. THe days of yanking something off the shelf and being happy are over.

And regarding your Ibanez neck through MR.Pope, you got some pics? I cant really give you much info from here sadly. Doesnt sound too serious though.if you never touched the rod before storage you should restring and just let it sit for a few days before fiddling. Dont even bother to tune super well either, will take some time to settle back, if you start changing things now the difference will compound after it settles and you could end up ffed in the A!

:idk: I use to really go by this but my last few guitars/ basses I've gotten were online... granted not new and gibson... I have a old Burny SG which I had shipped from Japan... I have yet to see a new Gibson that comes close to it...

Hey man you never know, I just can let my self do it! Gotta drive that lady before you marry her...ALSO, renting is not very conducive to those who like to play doom...

No one was around So I got to crank up all the way to 1 today and fuck, it felt so good. Sometimes I forget how much better everything sounds loud. I feel like the volume knob should just be labelled awesomeness instead.
